Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Com-posers (Series) by Bertie Brown

Com-posers

10"w x 13"h

Bed Heads

Rain-drops are falling on the heads

Of all my sunflowers

Bursting up from their beds!

Soon, dancing in the aisles

They look down on me

With knowing smiles

And do the Jitter-bug hop...

Ahhh,

I never want them to stop!

Oh, happiest summer’s days

Under the season’s golden haze...

Lyrical Landscape by Bertie Brown

Lyrical Landscape

11"w x 14"h

Summer meadows

Smocked, calico print dresses

In pinks, yellows, greens and reds

Pastures of ruffled petticoats

Stitched delicately with yellow-green threads

Enveloped in bustling bee harmonies

Enhanced by birdsong melodies....

Beach Hash by Bertie Brown

Beach Hash

10"w x 13 1/2h

Ghost Crabs

Harmless sand creatures

All top speed and scurry,

With quick stop and go features

As Porsche race cars in a hurry!

Playing tag, hide and go seek

All day long on the beach

With sand, sun, the sea....

And especially, me!

BB'10

(There may or may not

Be a crab in this lot

I really can't tell

'Cause they hide out so well

Under any old shell...)

Busy Being Beets By Bertie Brown

Busy Being Beets

11"w x 14"h

Busy Being Beets

Sophie and I

Were shopping for clues

What could we possibly

Paint that is new

We passed by the eggplants

With nary a glance

We‘ve done them before

Those radishes next door

Were also a boor...

But then Sophie spied

From the corner of her eye

Red beets in a bunch

And she had hunch

Their leaves were so busy

Dancing this way and that

She said we should paint them

And work really fast!

We finished the painting

Our energy waning

We needed a nap

And knew it was time

To end this short rhyme...

Pear and Pomegranate Promenade By Bertie Brown

Pear and Pomegranate Promenade

22"w x 30"h

Promenade

Let the pear and pomegranate

Promenade begin

Over Matisse inspired fabric

They all march in

Three Pears in a bowl

That’s my grandma’s, really old

The bottle behind

Dates back to an earlier time

The spoon in the foreground

Brings us right in

The stripes in the background

Keep our eye down

And all of these elements

Keep our eye traveling

Around and around.

Molly and Ozzie and Sophie and Me

Me
Sophie
Ozzie

Molly

Sophie’s Proposal

Sophie and I

Were quiet and peaceful

Listening to tunes

In our creative arts room.

Suddenly Sophie insisted

I send some of our work

Off to an editor

Ackkkk,

I needed to be readier!

She called me a ‘twerp’

“Our poems are cute

Creative and smart

Stop dawdling and start

Producing some art!

A painting of Ozzie

Could you do one of Molly?

And absolutely most definitely

We need one of me!”

“Our fans love our musings

Imagined or real

A book series deal

Could happen!” she squealed.

I looked up proposals

And worked my way through it

Gathered poems and art

Sophie knew I would do it...

It’s e-mailed and gone

We just hope that the wait’s

Not terribly long.........

Molly's Fat Tire by Bertie Brown

Molly’s Fat Tire

What ho!

Where did our Molly go?

Sophie and I want to know...

She’s hidin’ in a box

Lookin’ a mite distraught

And also kinda’ blue

‘Cause the only thing in view

Is a bottle of Fat Tire Brew

And ‘though she knows

It’s smooth as silk

She’d rather have a bowl of milk!

Eggplant Eggs-travaganza by Bertie Brown

Eggplant Eggs-travaganza

13"w x 10"h

Egg-ceptional Eggplants

Sophie says let’s do a painting today

We’ll use some veggies

With plenty to say

There at the groc’ry store

Dark and demure

Eggplants so purple

Their beauty secure...

Yes, let’s buy them

Not to fry them

But to show the world

Their outspoken beauty

It’s really our duty

To capture their deep.....

Dark sheen!

Radish Recital by Bertie Brown

Radish Recital

image:13 1/2"w x 10 3/4"h

Radish Recital

Sophie said, Lets use our new paints today

Carmine and Windsor blue

Areolin too

What could we paint

With our trio so quaint

Radishes, I think, would work out just great...

Wet applications

Give us saturations

Int-resting patterns

With water and spatters

Red, blue and yellow

Make fine pallet-fellows

Radishes Blush

Their round cheeks red and lush...

And the foliage

Green and gold-ish

Finish off the work

The radishes vital

A rich red recital

Is now on display

Today!

“It’s Raining, It’s Pouring....

Sophie and I were bored

As we peered out the back door

And had to acknowledge

The steady downpour

We put on our thinking caps

Our imagination soared!

Hmm, I know,

Let’s go to New York and back

Via Lancaster’s Amtrak.

We’ll walk up Fifth Ave

Take in all the sights

We do wish “Les Mis”

Was playing The Shubert tonight.

We’ll visit Times Square

With bright neon lights

On tall buildings everywhere..

We quickened our step

We really must get

Ourselves to the Met

For a fabulous new show

Bronzino drawings, you know....

The day was soon gone

We made our way back

To Grand Central Station

Our memories intact.

This mini- vacation

Was great stimulation

The ride home so relaxing

We spent the time happily...

Dunes Dance (Series) by Bertie Brown

Dunes Dance

image: 18 1/2"w x 8 1/2"h

framed: 28 1/2"w x 19"h

Barrier Islands

All bluster and bluff

With towering tides

Racing to shore

Always in a huff

Biting the beach

Advancing more and more....

The sighing sands

Surrender their turf

While tall dancing dunes

Watch over the surf

Their beach bonnets swaying

And “No Trespassing” signs waving.......

Musically Inclined Series (Brass Trio) by Bertie Brown

Musically Inclined

10 1/2"w x 13 1/2h

Brass Class

Its a well known fact

That a trio of brass

Is hard to beat

In terms of class.

And favorite things

Are not much better

Not chocolate or cheese cake

Nor lobster or steak

Not mountains or beaches

Nor clear mountain lakes

Not cool drinks in summer

Nor hot drinks in winter

Not even sun-showers

That grow my sunflowers

The one thing that’s better

Than a classy Brass Trio

would certainly be

A Mozart Horn Solo..

Pepper Patter by Bertie Brown

Peppers here, peppers there

Peppers poppin’ everywhere

Some are yellow

Some serene green

All are mellow

Laid back fellows

Let’s not stop

With that mild lot

Let’s go for HOT

And that means RED

The big red bell?

Well, probably not

But you can tell

Those small hot shots

Are packin’ heat

That’s tough to beat!

BB'10

Grandma BB and Sophie

Sophia Shelley Brown

A Puzzlement

I wonder how so small yet intricate

This new-born girl so petite, delicate

Could steal our hearts completely away

With her first entrance

Into our arms this day.

we gaze upon her, oh so tender

To her our lives we do surrender.

So this is what they call selfless love

Sent down to us from heaven above.

BB’09

Sunflower Girl

Thank you, Sophie, my sunflower girl

For doing your part

As each day that you visit

You bring a bit of summertime back into my heart

The “Sophie Mobile”

Sophie’s got a new red car

That’s gonna take her near and far

It’s plush and bright

For her, just right

A “Sophie Mobile”

With purple wheels

It’s fully loaded

A dashboard that’s bloated!

With air bags and belt

Both made of felt

A seat the size

Of Sophie inside

With a rearview mirror

So she can see clearer

To check her hair

(She’s a diva, let’s be fair!)

There’s a key for the ignition

Where she goes is her decision..

For tunes, she’s got a radio,

A horn that blows

A trunk to stow

(I guess that’s now

Where I will go!)

And one thing more

inside the door,

It has a little space

The perfect storage place

That’s baby bottle shaped

Where it now sits

For her to sip.

Rhythm & Blues Series (bottles, bowls, apples) by Bertie Brown

Rhythm & Blues

21"w x 27"h

Rhapsody

“Rhapsody in Blue”

Was our music today

Sophie and I thrilled

To the opening way

That the clarinet soared

Through that octave and more...

We set up a still life

With lots of great blues

We have so much fabric

It’s hard just to choose

Then added some apples

Three bottles, two bowls

On top of the fabric

With plenty of folds

We hummed to the tunes

While painting till noon

Sophie, my rhapsody

In tap dancin’ shoes

Gerschwin and Orchestra

Playin’ his blues!

“It’s Raining, It’s Pouring....

Sophie and I were bored

As we peered out the back door

And had to acknowledge

The steady downpour

We put on our thinking caps

Our imagination soared!

Hmm, I know,

The Strasburg Railroad goes

To Paradise and back

A short scenic trip

Where Amish farms sit.

Sophie said, “No!”

We’ve already seen that

Let’s go to New York

Via Lancaster’s Amtrak.

We’ll walk up Fifth Ave

Take in all the sights

We do wish “Les Mis”

Was playing The Shubert tonight.

We’ll visit Times Square

With bright neon lights

On tall buildings everywhere..

We quickened our step

We really must get

Ourselves to the Met

For a fabulous new show

Bronzino drawings, you know.

Let’s not forget

That giant statue-et

We hailed a taxi

To the Staten Island Ferry

The ride was right quick

With no time for me

To be quite sea-sick!

The day was soon gone

We made our way back

To Grand Central Station

Our memories intact.

Was great stimulation

The ride home so relaxing

We spent the time happily

Grandmothers All

My vibrant sunflowers, once so spry

Have bent down a bit

Heaving a small sigh.

Arms now rest at their hips,

Heads no longer held high.

As they gather their skirts

With a knowing shrug

And tighten their bonnets,

In a sly little tug.....

Oh, they still love their quilting bees,

A Butterfly Ballet,

And fat golden finches,

Those hungry dine-ees.....

.Ahh, grandma sunflowers,

Now surely they be

Growing old so graciously.....

They're still beautiful to me.

Musically Inclined Series (Brass) by Bertie Brown

MusicallyInclined
image: 15"w x 17"h

The Brass Kingdom reigns

At the back of the stage

Looking over their subjects

In the rows down below

Now those Woodwinds don’t tow

As they do rightly know

That they have the means

To keep the pitch low

The Strings try to show

Their dominance, don’t ya know

While sitting at the toes

Of the Maestro’s looming pose...

Now a wise conductor knows

The music and musicians

Are the stars of his shows

The Alley Rally

The Golden Girls have gathered to rally

'Round my backyard Sunflower Alley.

Bending down to admire

All the portraits they did inspire.

“Oohs “ and “ahhs”... Yes, they see.

“That one looks like me!”

They all nod to agree

And reminisce nostalgically.

Not so long ago,

“It's only weeks, don't ya know!”

Remember back in the days

We had our young

And innocent ways,

We danced the jitter-bug hop

While catching golden sun-drops.

Surely, “Those were the days, my friend

We thought they'd never end”.........
