Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Quint's Jam Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Quint's Jam
original watercolor still life w/horn, woodwinds: 17"  x 22"

Winter Blues
oh, how i long for June or July
with summer sunshine
and butterflies passing by
this season of cold
has taken it’s hold
with harsh winds now wailin’
seems the sun has gone sailin’
so i’m getting all set,
though it’s hard not to fret,
as blankets cover my lap
 and i settle in
 for a long mid-winter’s nap......

Bouquet Haze Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Bouquet Haze
original watercolor still life w/flowers: 6" x 9"

how much can i hold
in my arms when i’m told
they're filled up, you see
with pieces of me

it’s getting so bad
i’m leaving a trail
of this and of that
forget it, i wail
well…maybe it’s just
fine'ly time to get tough
stop makin' a fuss
and toss out the stuff!

String-piration Watercolors by Bertie Brown

String-spiration
original watercolor still life w/violin, glass vessels: 12" x 14"

Sophie says
what ho
i just want to know
who’s lying in that manger bed
with a stable roof o’er His Head
and why are there reindeer
flying in the night sky
with a guy in a sleigh
following close behind
And
there’s a tree in our house
with packages strewn about
that i’m not s’posed to touch
and there seems to be such
a decorating fuss
it’s confusing, you know
for a little kid, so
i’ll just ask bb
i’m hoping that she

can explain it to me!

The Soloist Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Soloiest
original watercolor still life w/violin, glass : 11" x 15"

'twas time to relax
and take in the sight
of violin and glass
huddling en mass
seems they were just cold
‘though this season's bite
will be less, i’m told
but winter it is
and these things, like me,
miss summer you see

i think you'd agree

Dancer at Ease figure drawing by Bertie Brown

Dancer at Ease
pencil drawing of ballet dancer: 10" x 14"

i think that it’s done
and i had some fun
‘though there a few
solutions that skewed
my original view
and managed to be
surprising, you see
so if it’s not fit
or off just a bit
ignore if you please

thus dancer at ease!

Home Sweet Home Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Home Sweet Home
original home portrait: 9" x12"

it’s relative-ly
a new work, you see
with a subject that’s old
a shape big and bold
and some that are new
with int’resting hues
borrowed from yet
a past series set
hmmm...
it’s deja vu

for the home with a view!

Glassified Information Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Glassified Information
original watercolor still life w/horn, violin, glass vases: 15" x 17"

Things Strings Sing
do strings
 have wings
‘cause they’re glorious things
do they sing
as they cling
to the bow as it flows
o’re the bridge
if you please
with the greatest of ease
or
do they screech
as they seek
that impossibly high C
and then cringe
‘neath the fringe
of the conductor’s stare singed
do they slough
at the thought

of the job they just lost

Brass and Glass are a Pain in the ___ Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Brass and Glass are a Pain in the ___
original watercolor still life w/glass objects and horn: 19" x 26"

Practice makes better
But perfect?
Not ever...
Especially if horn playing
Is what you can do
You’ll prob’ly improve
But that’s questionable, too
My advice to you

Buy a French Horn Kazoo!

Bloomin' Plumeria Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Bloomin' Plumaria
original watercolor with plumeria{ 8" x 10"

if the trombone’s in charge
the trumpet won’t play
the horn won’t say
it he’ll go or stay
this is the way
our world behaves today
compromise is out
dissonance has clout
there could be peace and harmony
just quit the verbal armory!

M & M's House Watercolors by Bertie Brown

M & M's House
original watercolor home portratit:12" x 8"

i forget
do gnus
rhyme with canoes
or mile high heeled shoes
and what is the need
if you could, tell me please
of the extra L'd Llama
for it’s silent, do you see
is it oh so much better
to own one more letter
than the Lama, actual-ly

or the Nu with no G

Glassified in-Formation Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Glassified in-Formation
original still life watercolor w/horn, glass vases, marble: 12" x 14"

back in school
we learned the rule
that there were cliques
a specialty list
of kids way cool
though we weren’t fools
our own gene pools
just did not rule
we weren’t as blessed
our confidence less
we weren’t sure why
and could not guess
but since i've grown
i have been known
to play horn well
for quite a spell
now as i paint
i simply state
this art i make
is instrument’ly

a quirk of fate

The House That Josh (re)Built Watercolors by Bertie Borwn

The House That Josh (re)Built
original watercolor home painting: 8" x 10"

sometimes when I doubt
and nothing is clear
my horn just comes out
and a painting appears!
of course there are times
when plein air’s the way
and sunny warm climes

mean a landscape paint day!

It's The Little Things That Count Watercolors by Bertie Brown

It's The Little Things That Count
original watercolor still life w/horn, glass, marble: 12" x 14"

The French Conundrum
the french horn is happy
wherever it plays
from woodwinds and brass
to  the strings with such class
yes, the instruments agree
it’s sound does so please
and most of the time
the horn is quite amiable
but it can get unruly

and downright unplayable!

Passages Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Passages
original watercolor still life w/bust, glass, daisy: 14" x 18"

the piano-forte
is high on my list
of things i should try
before i am missed
but how in the world
could my fingers and toes
work all of those keys
and pedals of gold???
i can’t even think
of reading bass clef
‘cause treble takes all
 the brains i’ve got left
so maybe i’ll just
be happy that i
was suitably good
playing horn while i could

I've Got Sunshine
original watercolor still life w/ girl, glass, flower: 14" x 16"

in her favorite nook
she continues to look
at her favorite flower
hour upon hour
with hope and a prayer

for an autumn that's fair

Instrumental Junque Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Instrumental Junque
original watercolor still life w/horn/cornet:  12" x 18"
Reveille Reverie
morning runs unfold
the music in my soul
as meandering stream melodies
join humming meadow harmonies
my footsteps add the rhythm

and my heart sings along with’m..
