Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

There's Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

There's Still Life
original watercolor still life w/bottle, sunflower, apples: 11" x 14"

Sophie Says
what ho
i really want to know
who’s lying in that manger bed

with a stable roof o’er His head
and why are there reindeer
flying in the night sky
with a guy in a sleigh
following close behind
And
there’s a tree in our house
with packages strewn about
and Mommy's in a fuss
baking lots of good stuff
it’s confusing, you know
for a six year old, so
i’ll just ask BB
she'll explain it to me!

Pic o' Pitchers & Pot Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Pic o' Pitchers & Pot
original watercolor still life w/pitchers, coffe pot: 15 1/2" x 17"

absolutely resolute
i’m absolutely certain
some truth is indisputable
and strictly put imputable
so don’t go all refutable
i don’t want your rebuttable
that verbal psycho-babbable
you’re so above reproachable
and also un-correctable
but that’s just irresponsible
and truly indefensible
we could be more sympatico

if you weren’t so emphatico

Beaded BB Purses by Bertie Brown

Beaded Purses by BB
yes, a departure from WC painting,  but not for long!

the BeGe Grandies
of 2015
‘though growing quickly
are still The Bee’s Knees

there’s Aaron, he’s 3
the youngest grandie
so stubborn and smart
a whippersnapp-ee!
now Annabelle’s 5
all blondie-blue eyed
a whirlwind energized
in pre-K she thrives
and Sophie, she’s 6!
a sweet sunny mix
first grader, big Sis
WOW, these years went by quick!

so PopPop and I
would not be remiss
to tell our sons this
and this we insist:
these years are the best
through triumphs and quests
in decades you’ll attest

twas as good as it gets

Beaded Purse By Bertie Brown

BB Beaded Purse

a guest stint in music
did last but some time
i’ve got no regrets
no malice you’ll find
then creatively
art hap’ly found me
that work, challenging
i faced eagerly
but not only that
the best privilege yet
of grandie sitting
put me to the test
through all this and more
as listed before
the years and the tears
the struggles and fears
i did persevere
as onward i pressed
and did not forget
i was but a guest

Indian Summer Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Indian Summer
original watercolor landscape: 9" x 12"

what ho!
i’m gonna say this
gettin’ older is so
not tops on my list
seems there are some peeps
pollyannas and such
who’ll tell you how sweet
it is, that’s a bunch
of crap, oh ‘tis true
there are a few perks
please don’t misconstrue
we work out, not work
and nap after noon
but projects, we seek
(we don’t need a ton)
‘cause we gotta get
our satisfaction
the losses that come
are harsh, that’s a fact
‘though denied by some,
i’ve got much less tact
so try if you can
to put off old age
‘cause footloose it seems

ain’t quite fancy free

Autumn-ness Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Autumn-ness
original watercolor still life w/sunflowers, vintage pitchers: 9" x 12"

Ode to an Old Friend
what ho
where did the years go
we just can’t be fixed
here at decade #6
not young nor carefree
we must learn to see
determin-edly
through love-filtered lens
ourselves as OLD friends!
we’ve been through a lot
those flashes were hot!
but give in, we’re not
we’ve got some regrets
but that stuff’s no sweat
where once we had pimples
we’re now sporting wrinkles
our firm derrieres
have gone off elsewheres
our chests and our chins?
they’ve sunk to our shins
and do you remember
well
can you recall
anything you need to
anything at all?
but still we can laugh
at some high school gaffe
and reminisce by the hours
the good, bad, ugly
while we sit and smugly
think we’ve now arrived
over 60, we’ve survived
and we’re not the faintest

nor least bit surprised...

A Radish a Day Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

A Radish a Day
original watercolor still life w/radishes: 8" x 10"

Sophie and I
Were shopping for clues
What could we possibly
Paint that is new
We passed by the eggplants
With nary a glance
We’ve done them before
Those red beets next door
Looked just a bit poor
But then Sophie spied
From the corner of her eye
Some radishes in a bunch
And she had a hunch
Their leaves were so busy
Dancing this way and that
She said we should paint them
And work really fast!
We finished the painting
Our energy waning
We needed our nap
And knew it was time

To end this short rhyme!

The BB Bunch Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The BB Bunch
original watercolor floral work w/sunflowers: 9" x 12"

at the end of the day
i had but one thought
what happens to all
this work that i’ve wrought
‘twas always the best
of efforts i gave
my utmost, no less
and had some success
in music, of course
i’m wondering now
did it happen at all
if so, then how??
i gratefully bow
to Mozart and Bach
i painted to them,
and Beethoven, a lot
but what happens next?
i’ve time to fill
and miles to go
energy still

until, until....

The Brassy Bunch Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Brassy Bunch
original watercolor and ink w/horn, tuba, trumpet, trombone: 8" x 10"
Conch en Fa
There once was seashell named Conch
Who was lonely and displeased with his lot
So he puffed out his cheek
Buzzed a low mellow screech

Now he’s part of the rock group “Conch-crete”

The Greeter Girl gets Winterized/ Watercolors and other stuff by Bertie Brown

what ho
Sophie and I
just want to know
who turned off the heat
and dimmed the lights low
where are the wool socks for our feet
our sweater sets
and turtlenecks
who said summer could retreat
we are cold and so distressed
why have days become so bleak
it’s time I guess
to hibernate until next June
and we both hope

that comes real soon!

Musical Props Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Musical Props
original ink and marker w/horn, trumpet, tuba, trombone: 6" x 8"
brass blast
would a trumpet
be a strumpet
if he played a loose lipped jig
while his brother
played another
more pretentious tight hipped gig
would a trumpet
eat a crumpet
while he played a high brow dig
could a strumpet
be a pundit
if she shed her platinum wig?
would a trumpet
and a strumpet
wear a 5 inch high heeled shoe
could a crumpet
 clog a trumpet
if it got stuck in his tube?

Back to the Drawing Board Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Back to the Drawing Board
original figure drawing: 11" x 14"
back in school
we learned the rule
that there were cliques
a specialty list
of kids way cool
though we weren’t fools
our own gene pools
just did not rule
we weren’t as blessed
our confidence less
we weren’t sure why
and could not guess
but since I've grown
i have been known
to play horn well
for quite a spell
now as I draw
i do recall
that art and song
to ALL belong

Rockport Rendezvous, MA Seascape Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Rockport Rendezvous
original watercolor seascapes/ Bearskin Neck; The Headlands; Rockport, MA

Symphony in Sea Major
Lobster buoys afloat
As art dotting coves and boats
Decorating New England’s coast
With quirky colors its fishermen boast
And sublime northern light
Envelopes the sights
While dancing on tides
That toss those floats
 From side to side
Cormorants and gulls line up on the rocks
By the boats, or the docks
As they noisily wait
For some leftover bait
Granite boulders edge the shores
Firm foundations that endure
An applauding boisterous sea
BRAVO!

What a glorious symphony!

Beyond Bearskin Neck Seascape Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Beyond Bearskin Neck
original watercolor seascape/ Bearskin Neck, Rockport MA: 9" x 12"

Lobsterman Shacks
Floats, traps
Lobsterman snacks
Ropes, tacks
Fishing knick-knacks
Boots, slickers
Lobsterman knickers
I bet there’s a place
For trusty duct tape
And WD 40
They’ve got it, surely
All this and more
Behind windows and doors
Filling crannies and nooks
And hanging on hooks
So remember this stuff
When you’re all in a huff
As you pay lots of bucks
For that Lobster you thought
cost way too darn much

At the boat dock co-op!

Rockport MA Harbor Seascape Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Rockport MA Harbor
original watercolor seascape/Rockport, MA : 9" x 12"

Buoy Joy
Buoys will be buoys
In all shapes and sizes
Just like us girls
Despite our disguises
Buoys are like boxers
Ducking and weaving
Treading ocean waters
With strong currents heaving
The stripes that they wear
Go round and around
They look quite rotund
 But they don’t much care
They do a sun dance
Giving tides not a glance
They’re anchored from below
And they won’t let go
They do their job joyously

Behaving so buoy-ishly!

Com-Posers Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Com-Posers
original: 5" x 7"

You’re probably bored
After all you’ve endured
These paintings of girls
And their golden curls
They do love to preen
In their gold and green
They freely admit
They’re a bit narcissist
So I stay the course
With no due remorse
Posting these pix
‘Cause they just insist
They must know the drill
The need they fulfill
Their beauty will fade
As cool winds invade
So as the fall season
Begins that’s the reason
I post and I hope

 The paintings are pleasin’
