some 90 plus temps

which should be exempt

come back with a shout

and knock us right out

oh yes there’s the rub

to early fall fun

those idyllic days

come quickly undone....

Well

the music said “rest”

so the woodwinds obeyed

they rested their best

and quietly laid

their reeds 

and their keys

right down

on the ground

then I got my stuff

my paints, pan and brush

turned on my i-tunes

and worked until dusk

now when I was done

I took just one quick 

look and a think

it's done, I proclaimed

and pronounced it a day!

Stunning Conclusions

here so fast

is the stunning conclusion

to their storied past

a brief summer season

those sunflower girls 

left with spiky 

brittle

and lifeless curls

their skirts a jumble

of dry twisted leaves

how easily they crumble

yet still they cleave

to the good ol’ summer days

when they danced the be-b0p

in their fancy-free way

the queens of the hop

with nary a care

nor thought for the morrow

those girls, savoir faire

had nary a sorrow

with curls unfurled

and skirts that flew

they dipped and twirled

on their one high-heeled shoe

I sure do miss them

I bet you do,

 too
