Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

The Windy City Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Windy City

original watercolor cityscape w/woodwinds: 10" x 14"

more treasures I find

as still I press on

will I get to an end

will it ever be done

dreams lurk in my mind

every night as I rest

while days are task-filled

on this treasure filled quest

I know that in time

there’ll be a reward

a peace not soon spoken

but one that endures

The Brass Street Boys Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Brass Street Boys

original watercolor cityscape w/instuments: 10" x 14"

 Tuba or Not Tuba

If the Tuba can’t solo

He just won’t play

He takes his music

And stomps away

With a deep rumbling sound

He slumps in his case..

Are you like a tuba

With his sulky ways

Cafe Aulait Watercolors by Bertie Brown

CafeAulait

original watercolor cityscape, Lititz PA: 8" x 10"

Spring Fling

My windows are open

Cool breezes are flowin’

My curtains are flirtin'

With the sash and the sill

This is the way

A late spring day

Ought always to be

For two months or three

Sounds perfect to me...

Wouldn’t you agree?

NY State of Mind Watercolors by Bertie Brown

NY State of Mind
original watercolor cityscape: 9" x 12"

my sister’s a knitter
a fine knitter sitter
she sits and she clicks
those long shiny sticks
coaxing mile after mile
of yarn into tricks
her magical styles
of socks called argyles
and mittens and vests
are simply the BEST
she expertly winds
these loops into gear
that keep us quite warm

during COLD winters here

Kelly in Blues Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Kelly in Blues
original watercolor cityscape w/Kelly: 9" x 12"

Abrupt
is how i’d describe
the weather outside
‘cause one day it’s HOT
and pleasant - it’s NOT
the next day’s so cold
there’s frost on my nose
the furnace is running
it seems ‘round the block
while i sit here humming
the ‘icelandic rock’
so where did it go
that summertime cheer
did it show up this year
did i miss it, i fear
i’m sportin’ enough
sweaters and stuff
i’d rather be sweatin’

but cold’s what i’m gettin’

UpTown Girl Watercolors by Bertie Brown

UpTown Girl
watercolor cityscape: 9" x 12"

this world’s a porcupine
all sharp quills, sticking out
prickly, defensive
voices raised in deafening shouts
no generosity
nor compromise
just hyper right-eousity
we're crumbling on the inside -
gotta push the hate out........

Uptown Girls By Bertie Brown

Uptown Girls

12 1/2w x 17 1/2h

“It’s Raining, It’s Pouring....

Sophie and I were bored

As we peered out the back door

And had to acknowledge

The steady downpour

We put on our thinking caps

Our imagination soared!

Hmm, I know,

The Strasburg Railroad goes

To Paradise and back

A short scenic trip

Where Amish farms sit.

Sophie said, “No!”

We’ve already seen that

Let’s go to New York

Via Lancaster’s Amtrak.

We’ll walk up Fifth Ave

Take in all the sights

We do wish “Les Mis”

Was playing The Shubert tonight.

We’ll visit Times Square

With bright neon lights

On tall buildings everywhere..

We quickened our step

We really must get

Ourselves to the Met

For a fabulous new show

Bronzino drawings, you know.

Let’s not forget

That giant statue-et

We hailed a taxi

To the Staten Island Ferry

The ride was right quick

With no time for me

To be quite sea-sick!

The day was soon gone

We made our way back

To Grand Central Station

Our memories intact.

This mini- vacation

Was great stimulation

The ride home so relaxing

We spent the time happily

Dozing and napping...
