Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Cold Play Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Cold Play
original watercolor still life w/sunflowers, apples. lemon: 10" x 14"

Sophie’s Sun Sack
remember back when
we played in the sun
yes summer was then
days so full of fun
and do you recall
you looked up to ask
could we pack it all
up tight in a sack
we’d store it away
then open that pack
on a cold winter’s day

for a sun bathing nap!

Pot 'o Posies Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Pot 'o Posies
original watercolor still life w/sunflowers: 9" x 12"

there could be misconceptions
some slight depth perceptions
a misappropriation
with no negotiation
i will not enhance
renounce at a glance
embellish or squellish
not even a chance
it just filled a day
in the neighborhood i’d say
so onward i press

in search of success…

More Trebled Times Watercolors by Bertie Brown

More Trebled Times
original watercolor musical motif w/bassoon, clarinet, oboe, flute:10" x 14"

i think that it’s done
and i had some fun
‘though there a few
solutions that skewed
my original view
and managed to be
surprising, you see
so if it’s not fit
or off just a bit
ignore if you please
this mucical scene

City of Light Watercolors by Bertie Brown

City of Light
original watercolor instruments w/clarinet. oboe, bassoon, horn, flute, strings: 11" x 15"

A View From the High C’s
Is where I’ll be
With sketchbook in hand
Though it’s not what I planned
As I once took my place
In the second horn space
Or I  played in the band
Or a show
With the pit crew way below...
But this view’s not so bad
There’s no stress to be had
Here in the Fulton’s lofty lairs
Above the balcony
And second stairs
Now the music that surrounds
These halls and abounds
Gives my paintings their sound
And I’m glad just to see

This view from the high C’s...

NY State of Mind Watercolors by Bertie Brown

NY State of Mind
original watercolor cityscape/ NY: 12" x 16"

Play Away
it’s really okay
to chill out and play
we all know we should
(that is understood)
but still we forget
and totally get
ourselves in fun debt
we think if we could
buy us some fun
then surely we would

feel wonderf’ly good

City of Lights Watercolors by Bertie Brown

City of Lights
original watercolor w/horn, clarinet, oboe, flute: 11" x 14"

Quints Jam
The woodwind Quintet
Is surprised and upset
That a brass French Horn-et
Is allowed on their set
But the French Horn explained
While the Woodwinds complained
That his rich rounded sound
Keeps the Woodwinds anchored down
So they changed all their plans
And that’s how it began

For the “Woodwind Quints Jam”!

Re-Tree-t Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Re-Tree-t
original watercolor trees: 6" x 10"

Lumber Jack Ernie
‘Twas 3 weeks before Christmas
And all through Ernie’s house
Not a creature was stirring
Not even a grouse
(Ernie loves birds
In case you haven’t heard)
The trunks were all split
And the bundles of sticks
Were hauled off and gone
(It took all week long)
The lawn was layed bare
Not a branch was left there
Now Ernie was pooped out
And down for the count
Yes a long winter’s nap

Sans his jacket and hat!

Model Session Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Model Session
original watercolor portrait:
9" x 12"
Winter Blues
oh, how I long for June or July
with summer sunshine
and butterflies passing by
this season of cold
has taken it’s hold
with snow now fallin’
seems the sun shine is stallin’
so I’m gettin' set,
though it’s hard not to fret,
as blankets cover my lap
 and I settle in

 for a long mid-winter’s nap......

Cor En Fa Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Cor en Fa
original water media horn: 9" x 12"

The French Conundrum
The French Horn is happy
Wherever it plays
From Woodwinds and Brass
To  the Strings with such class.
Yes, the instruments agree
It’s sound does so please.
And most of the time
The horn is quite amiable
But it can get unruly
And downright unplayable!

In-Cor-perated Watercolors by Bertie Brown

In-Cor-perated
original watercolor horn: 8" x 10"

back in school
we learned the rule
that there were cliques
a specialty list
of kids way cool
though we weren’t fools
our own gene pools
just did not rule
we weren’t as blessed
our confidence less
we weren’t sure why
and could not guess
but since i've grown
i have been known
to play horn well
for quite a spell
now as i paint
i simply state
this art i make
is instrument’ly

a quirk of fate
