Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Falstaff Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Falstaff
original watercolor sunflowers: 12" x 15"

this world’s a porcupine
all sharp quills, sticking out
prickly, defensive
voices raised in deafening shouts
no generosity
nor compromise
just hyper right-eousity

and zealous fight-eousity
we're crumbling from the inside -
lets all push the hatred out

Fall Fest Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Fall-Fest
original watercolor sunflowers, apples: 12" x 14"

those Gossipin’ Girls
want y’all to know
they’re still hangin’ round
the ‘old folks’ hometown
seems they’re gettin’ set
to host an event
it’s been 50 years
since they left the nest
the menu’s the same
though some might complain
‘cause aging has changed
their innards these days
oh,  burgers and fries
will still hit the spot
but splits and ‘fly-pies
are a bit o’re the top
so do not worry
it won’t be late

this midnight soirĂ©e
will close down by 8

Octoberfest Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Octoberfest
original watercolor sunflowers, apples: 12" x 12"

Abrupt
is how i’d describe
the weather outside
‘cause one day it’s HOT
and pleasant - it’s NOT
the next day’s so cold
there’s frost on my nose
the furnace is running
it seems ‘round the block
while i sit here humming
the ‘icelandic rock’
so where did it go
that summertime cheer
did it show up this year
did i miss it, i fear
i’m sportin’ enough
sweaters and stuff
i’d rather be sweatin’

but cold’s what i’m gettin’

End of the Season Rush Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

End of the Season Rush
original watercolor sunflowers: 10" x 15"

The Golden Girls
my sunflower deli
has finally closed
the frailty of my girls
is sadly exposed
gone are the bonnets
framing each face
like Emily’s sonnets
they’ve fallen from grace
their once dripping nectar
has all but been drawn
their glorious beauty
vanished, gone
the busy bumble bees
have packed their suitcases
backpacking butterflies
have flown to new places
and have you-all noticed
those feisty goldfinches
have suddenly fled
good riddance, you grinches!
so farewell, Golden Girls
of this i am certain
it’s that time of year
to draw summer’s curtain....

All Buttered Up Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

All Buttered Up
original watercolor sunflowers: 10" x 13"

my backyard buffet
is wasting away
as all those summer days
to my great dismay
but autumn is near
'tis nothing to fear

‘cause cool temps are here
so lift up a cheer!

Com-Posers Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Com-Posers
original watercolor sunflowers: 10" x 14"

it’s relative-ly
a new work, you see
with something that’s old
a shape big and bold
and some that are new
with int’resting hues
borrowed from yet
a past series set
hmmm...
it’s deja vu

for the sunflower view!

Com-Poser Soon Over Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Com-Poser
original watercolor sunflower: 9" x 12"

my sunflowers are done
their petals are gone
though the finches, I see
are still havin’ fun
they no longer cling
to those sunflower rims
to split and to spit
the shells that they’ve bit
they just take their seats
at the table..a feast!
it’s the best buffet yet
for those finches, I bet
‘tis a glorious thing
a goldfinch grinch fling
but for me, I just fret

‘cause autumn comes next!

Endless Summer Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Endless Summer
original still life with hydrangias, ahells, bowl: 15" x 17"

Ackkk!
 the sun’s in retreat
giving me the cold shoulder
this summer romance
is apparently over
gone are the sundrops
warming my face
menacing shadows
have taken their place
 cobalt blue breezes
rustle about
autumn is coming
of that there’s no doubt
my sunflowers are ruined
their beauty in tatters
seeds, petals, leaves
lie tossed about, scattered
i notice the dance
of those spurious squirrels
as they snatch the remains
of my golden sun girls
more quickly than ants
at a picnic, they advance
and I thought that finches
were sunflower grinches!
now I’m left all alone
‘neath a dry, crumbling wall
where my sunflowers once stood
majestic and tall
i’ll try not to fear
as a hope becomes clear
they’ll be back next year

with more summertime cheer!

Autumness Watercolors by Bertie Brown

 Quasi's Pik
Quasi's Kid
original watercolor squirrel: 5" x 8"
as summer reclines
in translucent honey haze
autumn comes alive
with transparent amber days
inky blue nights
fill infinite skies
cool winds collide
pushing summer aside
these transitions are inherent
seasons come
and seasons go

with their foibles quite apparent
