Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Poppy Polka Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Poppy Polka
original: 11" x 14"

oh my girls
with their curls
gossip all the day long
giggles here
sniggles there
oh the secrets they share
“she’s a lush”
then they blush
oh it’s all so unjust
when it comes
to their chums
they tell all and then some
so I must
paint and just
let them gab without fuss
it’s in jest
I just bet

though I’ve got no proof yet...

Berry-licious Watercolors by Bertie Brown

original watercolors w/strawberries

are Lightning Bugs
that blink in the night
just summer time pluggers
getting on with their lives
or do they endeavor
to be so much better
when call-ed fire-flies
alighting June nights
it’s really semantics
but much more romantic
and downright dra-mantic
to portray all their frantic
light sparking antics
when their claim to fame
- a butt with a flame -
is enhanced by a name

BB Greeters by Bertie Brown

BB’s in charge
it’s plain to see
and she’s quite up front
with this truth indeed
she stands on the stoop
welcoming all
and when you’re inside
she’s there in the hall
so do come on in
admire all her art
chat, sip and sup....

her home is her heart

Poppy Pizzicato Floral Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Poppy Pizzicato
original watercolor poppies: 11" x 14"

hey Sophie, look here
a poppy has appeared
it’s broken the spell
of it’s green fuzzy shell
now orange petals prance
like petticoats at a dance
let’s give her a name
that suits her perky frame
“Penelope”, Sophie said
as she eyed our poppy bed
and sat down to paint

Penelope’s happy face

Suddenly Summer Floral Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Suddenly Summer
original floral watercolor w/pansies, poppies, petunias: 11" x 14"

Sophie and I
Are enjoying this fine weather
With temps in the 80’s
It couldn’t be better!
This summer prelude
Has put us in the mood
For picnics at brunch
That last until lunch
Our silly girl talks
Become lazy long walks
We jauntily jogs
In our sporty running togs
Then return home safe
Where nap-time awaits!

Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Becoming BB
decorated dressform w/BB made pretty pink skirt

how much can i hold
in my arms when i’m told
they're filled to the brim
with art, script and scrim
it’s getting so bad
i’m leaving a trail
of this and of that
both artsy and craft
well…maybe i'll just
stop doing so much
and causing a fuss

after all, it's only some stuff!

Spring-Spiration Floral Watercolors by Bertie Brown

original watercolor floral: 11" x 14"

Buttercup Days
Sophie and I
Are anxious time counters
Of the weeks, days and hours
Till summer and sunflowers..
So we’re planning an event
To keep us content
A picnic's our intent
In a meadow very near
Where busy bees peer
Over petals and cheer
Their great luck at finding
A clover patch so inviting
And birds by the throngs
 Sing melodious spring songs
We’ll have buttercup bread
To keep our tummies fed
Meadow tea for me
None for Sophie till she’s thirteen
So we’re waiting for our day
A winsome,
Wondrous day
Would you like to come
Please do

We’ll be waiting there for you!

May Day Floral Watercolors by Bertie Brown

May Day
original watercolor spring flowers: 11" x 11"

Sophie and I
are asking you-all
are buttercups high in cholesterol?
they glisten like butter
in their golden yellow clusters
we think they’d taste great
and we’d be well fed
if we used them as spread
on jam or jelly bread
wouldn’t popcorn just popped
be better with hot
melted buttercups drizzled
all over the top?
is lobster that’s baked
in buttercup paste
richer in flavor
more pleasing to taste?
Sophie and I
just giggled and said
we think that we’ll paint

those buttercups instead!

Spring is in the Air Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Spring is in the Air
original watercolor still life w/pitcher, daffodils: 11" x 14"

Spring Bliss
My windows are open
Cool breezes are flowin’
My curtains are flirtin'
With the sill and the sash
This is the way
A fine spring day
Ought always to be .......

I bet you’d agree!

Com-Posers Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

original watercolor sunflowers: 7" x 11"

Sophie’s Spring
Grassy green grass
Prickles and tickles
Sophie’s pink piggies
All wiggly and squiggly
Babbling birdie birds
Chirp quirky birdie words
Buzzing bees fly
By Sophie’s blue eyes
Daffodils gaze
Tulips parade
My poppies sing praise
Springtime, nature’s fling-time
“Neath a shy smiling sun
Nature’s prelude
To the deluge
Of sunny flowers soon to come...
