Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Hi Anthropology Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Hi Anthropology

original watercolor musical motif w/horn, shells: 15" x 17"

Bobbie Corno

an alias don’cha know

doesn’t tiptoe around

like others he’s found

but plays out right proud

and oft’ times quite loud

‘cause really, why doubt

and fumble about

with 16 feet of tubing

and a bell worthy of spewing

forth plenty of sound

more beauteous, unbound

than others, hands down

Rock Stars Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Rock Stars

original wtercolor musical still life w/drums, guitar, piano: 12" x 12"

Drummer’s Dilemma

There’s drums a-plenty

For the drumming fanatic

From the triplet set’s least

To the bass drum, that beast,

The choices never cease!

With notes so sporadic

And sometimes exotic

It can be hypnotic

But always drum-atic!

Quints' Jam Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Quints' Jam
original watercolor musical instruments/ woodwind quintet: 10" x 14"

licorice whips
and lollipop licks
glasses and globes
and woodwinds also
it’s relative you know
but one thing’s for sure
this group needs a horn
with full rounded bore
to balance the sound
of notes up and down
and licorice whips
are relative links
to lollipops licks

atop that long stick

The Heart of the Orchestra Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Heart of the Orchestra
original watercolor instrumental w/strings, woodwinds: 10" x 14"

 A String Thing
The strings are such
A complicated section,
We say that and invoke
Our greatest affection,
With notes that soar
To the highest of heights
The violins bow frantically
Trying to get it just right!
And notes writ so low
A bass’s brow frowns
While bending to bow
So low to the ground.
Always self important
No humility, not a trace
They sit right up front
And take up prime stage space.
The rest of the orchestra
Accepts this with grace
Their parts they play well..
 They are quite exceptional,

And oh so professional...

All That Jazz Watercolors by Bertie Brown

All That Jazz
original watercolor instruments, piano/trumpet/trombone, drums: 17" x 17"

There’s rhythm in Blues
drums, keyboard and brass
they’re hoping that, too
there’s payment in cash
they pass around notes
like we did in school
but these notes are ‘cool’
they don't follow rules!

Busted Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Busted
original watercolor still life w/Beethoven and Mozart busts: 22" x 15"

a musician displays
exhibitionist ways
but it’s all okay
‘cause music filled days
and nights do remain
quite high on our list
of things we like best
so please don’t insist

we cease and desist!

The Musical Fish Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Musical Fish
original watercolor still life w/violin, horn, clarinet: 22" x 15"

i keep pressing on
‘cause that’s what I do
to see what comes next
with a painting or two
there’s music, of course
and instruments, sure
violin and horn
 clari and more
it’s funny, you know
when themes just won’t go
and my artwork shows

my real life also

The Bent Clarinet Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Bent Clarinet
original watercolor w/clarinet, violin: 9" x 12"

the clari is back
and these are the facts
there’s still lots to do
with instruments too
now classical is in
what a glorious thing
and a clarinet gliss
with a Gershwin-esque twist
brings a year that is new
completely in tune

Christmas Brass Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Christmas Brass
original watercolor musical motif w/trombone, trumpet, horn: 10" x 14"

Sophie Says
what ho
I just want to know
who’s lying in that manger bed
with a stable roof o’er His head
and why are there reindeer
flying in the night sky
with a guy in a sleigh
following close behind
And
there’s a tree in our house
with packages strewn about
that I’m not s’posed to touch
and there seems to be such
a decorating fuss
it’s confusing, you know
for a little kid so
I’ll just ask BB
I’m hoping that she
can explain it to me!

Instrumental Motif Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Quints' Jam
original: 15" x 17"
Cor en Fa
original: 9" x 12"
The Maestro's Woe
original; 10" x 14"

The French Conundrum
the french horn is happy
wherever it plays
from woodwinds and brass
to  the strings with such class
yes, the instruments agree
that it’s sound does so please.
and most of the time
the horn is quite amiable
but it can get unruly

and downright unplayable!

Symphony Season Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Symphony Season
original watercolor w/instruments: 12" x 15"

The Maestro’s Woes
Horns near the backdrop
The Strings own the front spots
Right in the center
Are the Woodwind renters
Drums and percussion
Beat out the instructions
Harp and Celesta
Join in their discussions...
Playing together for better or worse
Learning the music
They all must rehearse
Perfecting rhythms
Some tricky, some fun
All of the orchestra
Playing as one...
Allegretto
Meno mosso
And Con Brio, too
Mezzo, Piano, Fortissimo Piu
We love all those ways
To play!
Tubas and trombones
Will fight for their turf
Oboes with puffed cheeks
Look ready to burst
Flutes, Clarinets
The Violas, Trumpets
All so polite
As they try not to fight.....
Instruments waiting for Maestro to cue
Watching the down beat
His hand in their view
A Violin shrieks
A clarinet squeaks
Scowls from the Maestro
But onward they go...
When notes don’t sing
From the high Strings
Or a horn butts in
The music continues
The Maestro in tow
The audience shouts
“Bravo!”

City of Light Watercolors by Bertie Brown

City of Light
original watercolor instruments w/clarinet. oboe, bassoon, horn, flute, strings: 11" x 15"

A View From the High C’s
Is where I’ll be
With sketchbook in hand
Though it’s not what I planned
As I once took my place
In the second horn space
Or I  played in the band
Or a show
With the pit crew way below...
But this view’s not so bad
There’s no stress to be had
Here in the Fulton’s lofty lairs
Above the balcony
And second stairs
Now the music that surrounds
These halls and abounds
Gives my paintings their sound
And I’m glad just to see

This view from the high C’s...

Quint's Jam Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Quint's Jam
original watercolor still life w/horn, woodwinds: 17"  x 22"

Winter Blues
oh, how i long for June or July
with summer sunshine
and butterflies passing by
this season of cold
has taken it’s hold
with harsh winds now wailin’
seems the sun has gone sailin’
so i’m getting all set,
though it’s hard not to fret,
as blankets cover my lap
 and i settle in
 for a long mid-winter’s nap......

Musical Props Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Musical Props
original ink and marker w/horn, trumpet, tuba, trombone: 6" x 8"
brass blast
would a trumpet
be a strumpet
if he played a loose lipped jig
while his brother
played another
more pretentious tight hipped gig
would a trumpet
eat a crumpet
while he played a high brow dig
could a strumpet
be a pundit
if she shed her platinum wig?
would a trumpet
and a strumpet
wear a 5 inch high heeled shoe
could a crumpet
 clog a trumpet
if it got stuck in his tube?

Trumped by Sax Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Trumped by Sax
original watercolor still life w/trumpet/sax: 11" x 14"

this winter’s so long
it’s long in the tooth
let’s give it a shove
let’s give it the boot!
my heating bill’s HUGE
yet my house is cold
I’m grumpy like Scrooge
with a frozen billfold…
there’s snow on my roof
and ice in my veins
my fingers, I’ve proof
are going insane!
they’re sending their prints
to sunnier climes
I think I’ll insist
I join them in this
we’ll drive ‘till we find
a welcoming spot
long on sunshine

with no winter bite!
