Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Jaky's Kid Amish Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Jaky's Kid

original watercolor Amish Boy: 10" x 14"

you cannot be chicken

if you do some paintin’

unless you are thinkin’

you’d like a good lickin’

‘cause just when that paint

does wondrous fresh stuff

your brain turns to mush

and you muck it all up

KaYacker Watercolors by Bertie Brown

KaYacker

original watercolor kayaker: 8" x 10"

There once was a kayakin' boy

who paddled with purposeful joy

He hit ev'ry rock

deliberate or not

And was of course first to the dock

Rockport-By-The-Sea Rockport Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Rockport-by-the-Sea

original watercolor seascape: Rockport, MA: 10" x 14"

Lobsterman Shacks

Floats, traps

Lobsterman snacks

Ropes, tacks

Fishing knick-knacks

Boots, slickers

Lobsterman knickers

I bet there’s a place

For trusty duct tape

And WD 40

They’ve got it, surely

All this and more

Behind windows and doors

Filling crannies and nooks

And hanging on hooks

So remember this stuff

When you’re all in a huff

As you pay lots of bucks

For that Lobster you thought

cost way too darn much

At the boat dock co-op!

Pot 'o Gold Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Pot 'o Gold

original watercolor sunflowers: 10" x 14"

the 2023

sunflower soiree

is in my backyard

it’s a sunflower farm

with plenty of charm

there’s gold in the glow

of this sumptuous show

as the finches and bees

in their feasting agree

so let’s have some fun

before summer’s done

we’ve one month or two

to enjoy the view!

The RedHead Sunflower watercolors by Bertie Brown

The RedHead

original watercolor sunflowers: 10" x 14"

Woo hoo Sophie

our girls have come back

it seems they’ve brought summer

in their backpacks

with petals wide open

and brown faces glowin’

there’s no time for faintin’

we gotta get set up

to work on our paintin’

yes Sophie, it’s true

“summertime

and the livin’ is fine....”

KaYackers Watercolors by Bertie Brown

KaYackers

original watercolor kayakers: 8" x 10"

Sophie and I

are questioning this

could June ever be

more perfect.... what bliss!

with cool linen days

sun dried, whitened bright

and navy blue nights

glitter sprinkled, twinkling lights

‘though we do love summer’s song

when those H’s* come on strong

we might be just a bit

distressed over it....

original watercolor rooster: 8" x 10"

There once lived a Rooster Cogburn

Jakey's Kid Amish Watercolors by Bertie Brown

 Jakey's Kid

original watercolor Amish goat: 10" x 14"

in the beginning

we all loved the sun

we couldn’t get enough

we were never quite “done”

our faces were bronzed

our hair sun-streaked gold

our innocence reigned

we’d never grow old

but time has a way

a mean streak, I’d say,

of hastening the days

that youth does betray

so now that we’re old

or older, to wit,

we’re gonna wise up

and use caution, just a bit...

Rockport-by-the Sea Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Rockport by-the-Sea

original watercolor Rockport MA: 10" x 14"

Symphony in Sea Major

Lobster buoys afloat

Lighthouses as beacons

 Decorating the coast

Sublime northern light

Enveloping the sights

While dancing on tides

Tossing boats and floats

From side to side

Cormorants and gulls

Line up on the rocks

By the boats, or the docks

As they anxiously wait

For some leftover bait

Granite boulders endure

Protecting the shore

Applauding the sea
BRAVO!

What a glorious symphony!

Goin' Courtin' Amish Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Goin' Courtin'

original watercolor Amish: 8" x  10"

now the Amish said

to the girl he wooed to wed

why can’t we simply try

to lay our views aside

let’s get along today

‘cause that’s the better way

to live in peace and harmony

will benefit our kin you see

HippieGirl on the Move Watercolors by Bertie Brown

 HippieGirl on the Move

original watercolor portrait: 8" x 10"

Harmo-nious Perso-nious

went out for a run

this very fine day

had lots to be done

stuff that gets in the way

of some fun in the sun

but nature’s libretto

called out ceremo-nious

in pleasing vibrato

a sound tremolo-nious

twas something I sought to

experience in perso-nious

and when I got done

on this very fine day

from my run in the sun

I was all tuned up and completely harmo-nious

Amishin' Lancaster County Amish Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Amishin'

original watercolor Lancaster County Amish outing" 10" x 14"

are Lightning Bugs buggers

that blink in the night

just summer time pluggers

getting on with their life

or did they endeavor

as quaint named Fire-Flies

to be thought of as better

alighting June skies

it’s really semantics

‘though slightly pedantic

that one name’s romantic

and rightly dram-antic

‘cause all of their frantic

light sparking antics

begins with a flame

on the butt, hence the name
