Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Rockport on my Mind Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Rockport on my Mind

original watercolor seascape/Motif #1, Rockport: 8" x 10"

Lobsterman Shacks

Floats, traps

Lobsterman snacks

Ropes, tacks

Fishing knick-knacks

Boots, slickers

Lobsterman knickers

I bet there’s a place

For trusty duct tape

And WD 40

They’ve got it, surely

All this and more

Behind windows and doors

Filling crannies and nooks

And hanging on hooks

So remember this stuff

When you’re all in a huff

As you pay lots of bucks

For that Lobster you thought

Cost way too darn much

In Rockport at lunch

The Winds of Spring Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Winds of Spring

original watercolor still life w/woodwinds: 10" x 15"

Well

the music said “rest”

so the woodwinds obeyed

they rested their best

and quietly laid

their reeds

and their keys

right down

with no frown

then I got my stuff

my paints, pan and brush

turned on my i-tunes

and worked until dusk

now when I was done

I took just one quick

lollipop lick

then settled to munch

 a black licorice whip!

Quinbts' Jam Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Quints' Jam

original watercolor brass: 10" x 14"

Do you suppose

a brass quintet knows

the power they have

when they take the stand?

with no bounds they can

sound like a big band

they get it just right

their notes high and bright

with jazzy quick licks

and trombone slide tricks

and then comes the horn

who sounds so forlorn

while whalin’ so true

you weep with him too..BB'23

The Blues Brothers Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Blues Brothers

original watercolor bluebirds" 8" x 10"

it’s relative-ly

a new work, you see

with something that’s old

a shape big and bold

and some that are new

with int’resting hues

borrowed from yet

a past series set

hmmm...

it’s deja vu

for those orange and blues

Robin Reddington 'n Lizzie Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Robin Reddington 'n Lizzie

original watercolor bluebird and robin: 8" x 10"

Fine Whine

my sister says

you are gonna get it

my sister says

 you get a weather credit

my sister says

when this winter has been bedded

and the spring is this way headed

it will be so fine

the temps so kind you’ll  renounce all your whine..

Hank Heron Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Hank Heron

original watercolor heron: 8" x 10"

Things Strings Sing

do strings

 have wings

‘cause they’re glorious things

do they sing

as they cling

to the bow as it flows

o’re the bridge

if you please

with the greatest of ease

or

do they screech

as they seek

that highest high C

then cringe

‘neath the fringe

of the conductor’s stare singed

do they slough

at the thought

of the job they just lost

The Music of the Spheres Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Music of the Spheres

original watercolor musical instruments: 10" x 14"

if the trombone’s in charge

the trumpet won’t play

the horn won’t say

if he’ll go or stay

such is the way

our world behaves today

compromise is out

dissonance has clout

there could be peace and harmony

‘cause brass can play charming-ly

Hi Anthropology Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Hi Anthropology

original watercolor musical motif w/horn, shells: 15" x 17"

Bobbie Corno

an alias don’cha know

doesn’t tiptoe around

like others he’s found

but plays out right proud

and oft’ times quite loud

‘cause really, why doubt

and fumble about

with 16 feet of tubing

and a bell worthy of spewing

forth plenty of sound

more beauteous, unbound

than others, hands down

Downtown Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Downtown

original watercolor cityscape: 8" x 10"

Tuff Stuff

There once was a spring breeze named Sough

Not harsh nor decidedly tough

He nudged winter’s huff

Said “pick up your stuff”

And blew it away with a puff!

The Clash of the Titans Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Clash of the Titans

original watercolor musical instruments: 10" x 15"

Sophie says

BB what’cha doin’?

BB says

lookin’ all around

and this is what I’ve found

the fact is this

I’ve made a list

of works I love

that did not miss

the mark I set

for sure success

and though I know

bragadocio

is not allowed

I’ll not be cowed

I’ve got a LOT

that hit the spot

that’s great, you say

but not so, hey

It’s hard to paint

more-better-best

‘cause that’s a test

that makes me sweat!

DapperDils Watercolors by Bertie Brown

DapperDils

original watercolor daffodils: 8" x 10"

Sophie’s First Daffodil

As Sophie and I

Went out for our walk

We sang silly songs

And giggled and talked

Till we came to a hill

And there by the way

Bloomed a lone daffodil

A perky yet mellow

Friendly little fellow

We bent down to sniff

The petals just a bit

But I must confess

Though our sniffers did their best

We didn’t smell a thing

Except perhaps

A bit of Spring!

GooseBumps Watercolors by Bertie Brown

GooseBumps

original watercolor snow geese: 8" x 10"

Middlecreek  Music

The landing of geese

Into the lake at Middlecreek

Is a frantic yet rhythmic affair

With water splashing everywhere..

A honking, ear popping cacophony

It’s nature’s own spring symphony!

LongTallSally Watercolors by Bertie Brown

LongTallSally

original watercolor heron: 8" x 10"

I forget

do gnus

rhyme with canoes

or maybe high heeled shoes

and what is the need

if you could, tell me please

of the extra l'd llama

for it’s silent, do you see

is it oh so much better

to own one more letter

than the lama, actual-ly

or the nu with no g

'tis too bad this blue dude

has an n on the end

of his name it's a shame

oh, what he coulda been
