Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Bloomin' June Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Bloomin' June
original watercolor w/ sunflowers, susies: 11" x 14"

what HO!
i really didn’t know
that dizziness comes
from playin’ the flute some….
it does seem to me
with my head ‘tween my knees
that playin’ the horn
was easier born
i thought it would be
a cinch, do you see
but give up….not i
i’ll get better…i’ll try!
and next, for some fun
(it’s amazing what comes
from having free time…
these projects i find)
yes, i’m gonna see
if a ukulele
is just the bee’s knees
and so right for me
if none of this works
by some fateful quirk
i’ll give up the flute
and return that cute uke!
in case you’re left wond’rin’
how all of this fits
it’s simply the gist
of my life sans hornist
oh yeah, i do art
painting dwells in my heart
and grandies do too
as you know they do
but summer is here
i’ve 8 weeks, so cheers
to music and art
’tis such a great start!

Bloomin' June Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Bloomin' June
original watercolors w/sunflowers, petunias: 8" x 10"

My Backyard Sauna
It’s a sunflower sauna
and my flora and fauna
are roasting and toasting
there’s even some boasting
“Oh back in the day
in Savannah, I’d say
twas a’ hundred and three
under a live oak tree
I, no sunflower,
just a seed, don’t ya see
had a great aching need
to flee to PA
where I’d hoped to someday
join the sunflower parade
as a backyard summer guest
at BB’s Sunflower Fest”
well, that was my quest
now I’m part of the crew
and it’s hot up here too
so we’re growling as we’re toweling....

Shoulda moved to Kalamazoo

Petunias in June Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Petunias in June
original watercolor floral w/petunias: 11" x 14"

Sophie and I
Are enjoying this fine weather
With temps in the 80’s
It couldn’t be better!
This sweet summer prelude
Has put us in the mood
For picnics at brunch
That last until lunch
Our silly girl talks
Become lazy long walks
Then quick jaunty jogs
In our sporty running togs
Return us home safe

Where nap-time awaits!

Bloomin' June Petunias Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Bloomin' June
original watercolor  floral w/petunias: 11" x 14"

Sophie and I
Are painting plein air
Under bright sunny skies
On a day so fair
Our flowers primp and preen
While we apply the sunscreen
Then get right to work
As we quench our paper’s thirst
With lots of water, that’s our technic
‘Cause happy accidents are what we seek!
Bleeding colors, water marks
Lights contrasting with darkest darks...
Working quickly, we’re in a hurry
(We try not to worry
Will this be a keeper
Or one we will bury?)
Well, Sophie girl
What do you think
She nodded and smiled

And gave me a wink!

Tone Color Musical Motif Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Tone Color
original watercolor w/horn, violin, crayons: 11" x 14"

A View From the High C’s
Is where I’ll be
With sketchbook in hand
Though it’s not what I planned
As I once took my place
In the second horn space
Or I  played in the band
Or a show
With the pit crew way below...
But this view’s not so bad
There’s no stress to be had
Here in the Fulton’s lofty lairs
Above the balcony
And second stairs
Now the music that surrounds
These halls and abounds
Gives my drawings their sound
And I’m glad just to see

The view from the high C’s...
