Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Sunflwer Alley Sunflower Field Watercolor by Daily Painter Bertie Brown

Sunflower Alley
original watercolor sunflower field: 12" x 10"

my sunflowers are done
their petals are gone
though the finches, I see
are still havin’ fun
they no longer cling
to those sunflower rims
to pull split and spit
the shells that they fling
they just take their seats
at the table..a feast!
it’s the best buffet yet
for those finches, I bet
‘tis a glorious thing
as I hear them all sing
but for me, I just fret
‘cause autumn comes next!

Musically SUPERIOR Instrumental Watercolors by Daily Painter Bertie Brown

Musically SUPERIOR
original musical instrument watercolor with shells/feathers: 15" x 18"

the task of the horn
is to cast off all scorn
and proudly display
his technical ways
like a peacock, he struts
all his finery stuff
and if that’s not enough
he’ll wail in disgust
his penchant for flair
and the star he won’t share
says he’s come a great way
from his conch shell-y brays!

Water Girl Abstract Watercolors by Daily Painter Bertie Brown

Water Girl
original abstract watercolor: 15" x 18"

I think it’s done
and I had fun
‘though there were some
solutions that
to be exact
were just a tad
surprising, so
I really hope
it’s fit to show
if not,
you’ve got
to let me know......

Com-posers Sunflower Watercolors By Daily Painter Bertie Brown

Com-posers
original sunflower watercolor: 11" x 14"

Good Vibrations
I love the way
on a late August day
 the sun reaches down
to gather around
my sunflower girls
with their golden yellow curls
and their skirts made of leaves
swaying in the breeze...
The birds of the air
and the insects working there
create a vibration
a vibrato celebration
as they all harmonize
their praise to the skies...
I’m thankful just to be
by this shimmering sea
and grateful to hear
this music of the spheres

Show Off Musical Instrument Watercolor by daily Painter Bertie Brown

Show Off
original musical instrument watercolor with horn, violin: 15" x 15"

the task of the horn
is to cast off all scorn
and proudly display
his technical ways
like a peacock, he struts
all his finery stuff
and if that’s not enough
 he departs in a huff
his penchant for flair
and the star he won’t share
reminds me of one
who should be expunged!

Askew to You Still Life Watercolors by Daily Painter Bertie Brown

Askew to You
original atill life watercolor with horn: 15" x 15"

yes, things are askew
but that’s acceptable, too
‘cause when it’s called art
reality departs
and my point of view
might convince even you
that some things can be
true for both you and me

Com-posers Sunflower Watercolors by Daily Painter Bertie Brown

Com-posers
original watercolor sunflowers: 11" x 14"

And Yet
My sunflower girlfriends
have taken their bows
their reign at an end
the show has closed now
the summer stage crew
is striking the sets
takes a minute or two
tearing down all that’s left
a new show’s beginning
cool winds are approaching
autumn’s edgier tone
and pride is encroaching
there’s a sharp dialogue
burnt sienna, scarlet hue
and biting monologue
with a punchline, cobalt blue
I’m open, looking on
taking in the dry wit
wishing summer’s last song
would linger, just a bit

Sophie says
BB what’cha doin’?
BB says
lookin’ all around
and this is what I’ve found
the fact is this
I’ve made a list
of works I love
that did not miss
the mark I set
for sure success
and though I know
bragadocio
is not allowed
I’ll not be cowed
I’ve got a LOT
that hit the spot
that’s great, you say
but not so, hey
It’s hard to paint
more-better-best
‘cause that’s a test
I don’t request

Baubles and Bells Musical Instrument Watercolors by Daily painter Bertie Brown

Baubles and Bells
original musical instrument watercolor w/horn: 15"x 15"
for prints click: BertieSmugmug

back in the day
I remember we played
with marbles and jacks
and baseballs and bats
but sometimes I recall
though I tried hard to stall
I had to apply
my  lip
to the tip
of my tarnished old horn
and try not to sound
too bad or forlorn
much later I found
practice, patience plus time
would greatly improve
my horn teacher’s mood!
