Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

The Golden Gilrs Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Golden Girls
original watercolor sunflowers: 10" x 14"

summer is waning
i do hate to say
it wasn’t the best-est
in many a way
oh, some days were great
clear skies to the moon
the sun dripping rays
sunflowers in bloom
but most days were WET
with water drenched air
rain forest-y, yes
oppressive, you bet
still…summer’s the time
when memories shine
and life seems a bit

more civilized, kind

Com-Posers Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Com-Posers
original sunflwoer watercolor: 10" x 14"

Sunflower Girl Friends
I’m glad for late bloomers
as this season ends
each year it comes sooner
with the message it sends
to all of my battered
sunflower girl friends...
the dry trembling leaves
are scattered around
as sunflower sheaves
so brittle and brown
cool winds are approaching
pushing summer aside
with autumn encroaching
I nod and I sigh
 there’s no time to fuss
it’s just nature’s way
a fact that I must

embrace this fine day...

Com-Posers Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Com-Posers
original watercolor sunflowers: 10" x 14"

Good Vibrations
i love the way
on a late august day
 the sun reaches down
to gather around
my sunflower girls
with their gold-yellow curls
and their skirts made of leaves
that sway in the breeze...
the birds of the air
and the insects working there
create a vibration
a vibrato celebration
as they all harmonize
their praise to the skies...
i’m thankful to be
by this shimmering sea
and grateful to hear

this music of the spheres

The Sunflower Shack Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Sunflower Shack
original watercolor landscape en plein air: 10" x 14"

Goldfinch Grinch
My sunflower girls
Never use my sunblock
Nor do they apply
 Suntan lotion a lot
They’re naturally golden
Their brown faces boastin’
Their fearless devotion
To sunshine in motion
But there are some days
They have to confess
A shot of pest spray
Would be their best bet
For shoo-ing away
Gold finches of prey
‘Cause finches
Are Grinches
As they yank pull and splay
The petals and bonnets
My sunflowers boast
In my poems and sonnets
Why couldn’t they just

Gather seeds without fuss....

Com-Posers Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Com-Posers
original watercolor sunflowers: 9" x 12"

Adagio Dance...
It’s a scorcher today
With intensive sun rays
 My sunflowers have stopped
Their jitterbug hop
Choosing caution instead
With a rest in their bed
But before they retire
They’re feeling inspired
By their many dine-ees
To try if by chance
The Adagio Dance
They sway with the breeze
Take two steps, then three
Twirl and lift up their leaves
Bid the finches and bees
Come feast on our seeds
Sip nectar if you please
It’s a slow dance, you see
For the birdies and bees
Those flighty dine-ees
And admiring garden-ees

Sophie and me!

The Smokehouse at Landis Valley Farms Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Smokehouse at Landis Valley
original en plein air watercolor: 10" x 14"

so there i was painting
to whit, en plein air
the sun it was shining
the view oh so fair
what i did not see
was a stranger near me
he must have been testy
that bugger so pesty
who unknown to me
(painting diligently)
took exception, i guess
and gave me his best
i hollered out OUCH
you bugger you beast
i’m stung and you’re OUT
squashed by my feet
so here’s the main thing
when painting plein air
to avoid a bee sting
use bug spray EV’RYWHERE!
