Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Spring-Spiration

original watercolor flowers: 8" x 10"

Old Man Winter

it keeps on comin’

and don’t do nothin’

but keep me grumblin’

“it’s always somethin’ ”

 snow piles a’mountin’

3 feet and countin’

i gotta shovel

my back’s in trouble

oh

old man winter

it just keeps hangin’ around......

Popcorn Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Popcorn
original watercolor floral: 5" x 7"

Winter Blues

oh, how I long for June or July

with summer sunshine

and butterflies passing by

this season of cold

has taken it’s hold

with harsh winds now wailin’

seems the sun has gone sailin’

so I’m getting all set,

though it’s hard not to fret,

as blankets cover my lap

 and I settle in

 for a long mid-winter’s nap......

Bouquet Daze Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Bouquet Daze
original watercolor roses bouquet: 8" x 10"

Summer Bliss
My windows are open
Cool breezes are flowin’
My curtains are flirtin'
With the sill and the sash
This is the way
A fine summer day
Ought always to be
For two months or three....
Suites me perfectly

I bet you’d agree!

Fruit o' the Bloom Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Fruit o' the Bloom
original watercolor still life w/sunflowers, fruit: 9" x 12"

Weather Blues
oh, how i long
for June or July
and summer sunshine
filling the sky
this season is cold
it’s gettin' so old
with rain fairly seepin'
through all, i'm just weepin'
i’m still sportin' wristies
and sweaters indoors
i tell you i’m beggin’
for June at the shore
each year winter's gettin’
too hard to endure
while summer sits back

and just takes a nap

Wild 'N Crazy Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Wild 'N Crazy
original watercolor wildflowers: 9" x 12"

Sophie and I
are asking you-all
are buttercups high in cholesterol?
they glisten like butter
in their golden yellow clusters
we think they’d taste great
and we’d be well fed
if we used them as spread
on jam or jelly bread
wouldn’t popcorn just popped
be better with hot
melted buttercups drizzled
all over the top?
is lobster that’s baked
in buttercup paste
richer in flavor
more pleasing to taste?
Sophie and I
just giggled and said
we think that we’ll paint

those buttercups instead!

Pouty Peonies Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Pouty Peonies
original watercolor peonies: 9" x 12"

March cold and snow
bring April harsh winds that blow
bring dismal May showers
that pour on my flowers
for hours and hours....

Persistent Poppies Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Persistent Poppies
original watercolor poppies: 12" x 12"

Sophie’s Spring
Grassy green grass
Prickles and tickles
Sophie’s pink piggies
All wiggly and squiggly
Babbling birdie birds
Chirp quirky birdie words
Buzzing bees fly
By Sophie’s blue eyes
Daffodils gaze
Tulips parade
My poppies sing praise
Springtime, nature’s fling-time
“Neath a shy smiling sun
Nature’s prelude
To the deluge
Of summer days soon to come...

Tulip Time Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Tulip Time
original watercolor tulips: 9" x 12"

Haughty
 that’s what
my Sophie thought
the first time she viewed
our tulips in bloom
‘cause there they all stood
as only they could
with petals held high
reaching up to the sky
now Sophie and I
know daffodils try
to brighten our days
with their friendly ways
not haughty, aloof
their faces, the proof
of good will and cheer

‘cause springtime is here

The Waltz of the Flowers Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Waltz of the Flowers
original watercolor still life w/sunflowers, fruit: 10" x 14"

Winter Blues
oh, how i long for June or July
and summer sunshine
filling the sky
this season of cold
continues it's hold
with harsh winds a'keepin'
the temps around freezin'
this winter’s so long
it’s long in the tooth
let’s give it a shove
let’s give it the boot!
i’m still sportin' mitties
and ear muffs indoors
wool sweaters and wristies
but yet i need more
each year winter’s gittin’
too hard to endure
i should just be sittin'
on some southern shore
instead i’ve got blankets
piled high on my lap
i’m ready, in fact
for a 'spring-forward' nap……

Bloom 'n Fruit Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Bloom 'n Fruit
original watercolor still life w/lemon, oranges, apples, sunflowers: 10" x 14"

just keep tryin’, you say
so that’s what I do
not cease and desist
that’s never the way...
to break through the fray
you gotta hang tough
and paint every day

talent’s just not enough

January Thaw Watercolors by Bertie Brown

January Thaw
original watercolor still life w/sunflowers, apples, lemon: 10" x 14"

Spring Musical
oh spring
is the thing
we hope for in November
long for in December
lose in January
right through February
cry for in March
die for in April
can’t wait one more day
for the merry month of May
and still cold temps cling
to every bloomin’ thing!
so when the month of June
bursts suddenly into view
I look around and smile

and bid stay with me awhile

Pot 'o Posies Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Pot 'o Posies
original watercolor still life w/sunflowers: 9" x 12"

there could be misconceptions
some slight depth perceptions
a misappropriation
with no negotiation
i will not enhance
renounce at a glance
embellish or squellish
not even a chance
it just filled a day
in the neighborhood i’d say
so onward i press

in search of success…

Autumn Blaze Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Autumn Blaze
original watercolor sunflowers in vase: 9" x 12"

Sunflowers
sienna brown faces
sporting golden sun bonnets
reading Emily's quirky poems
and Edna's soaring sonnets
their leaves a canopy

of swirling skirts, it seems to me
with no better place to be
than in a vase here next to me!

Bouquet Daze Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Bouquet Daze
original watercolor bouquet: 9" x 12"

as summer reclines
in translucent honey haze
autumn comes alive
with transparent amber days
inky blue nights
fill infinite skies
cool winds collide
pushing summer aside
from translucent to transparent
these transitions are inherent
seasons come and they go
with their foibles quite apparent

The Tulip Trot Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Tulip Trot
original watercolor plein air w/tulips: 9" x 12"

what ho!
i’m gonna say this
gettin’ older is so
not tops on my list
seems there are some peeps
pollyannas and such
who’ll tell you how sweet
it is, that’s a bunch
of crap, oh ‘tis true
there are a few perks
please don’t misconstrue
we work out, not work
and nap after noon
but work we still seek
a job that’s well done
‘cause we gotta get
our satisfaction
the losses that come
are harsh, that’s a fact
‘though denied by some,
i’ve got much less tact
so try if you can
to put off old age
‘cause footloose it seems

ain’t quite fancy free

This Little Light of Mine Watercolors by Bertie Brown

This Little Light of Mine
original watercolor still life w/violin, flowers, lamp: 10" x 14"

just wonderin'....
is it musically correct
to combine different sects
of instruments, no less
to create a new sound
or a work of renown
going outside the bounds
of traditional ground?
or must we conform
to a list of reform
that keeps us secure

in our circuitous norm...

Bouquet Haze Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Bouquet Haze
original watercolor still life w/flowers: 6" x 9"

how much can i hold
in my arms when i’m told
they're filled up, you see
with pieces of me

it’s getting so bad
i’m leaving a trail
of this and of that
forget it, i wail
well…maybe it’s just
fine'ly time to get tough
stop makin' a fuss
and toss out the stuff!
