Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

TrioTrouble Watercolors by Bertie Brown

TrioTrouble

original watercolor sax player and musicians: 9" x 12"

from Studio B

yes, the time has come

to get the lead out

and get these things done

we know that they’re small

 and quirky, that too

plus, they’re priced right to sell

you need one, don’t you??

The CelticCrunch Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The CelticCrunch

original watercolor celtic gathering: 8" x 10"

I think that it’s done

and I had some fun

‘though there a few

solutions that skewed

my original view

and managed to be

surprising, you see

so now I don’t know

if it’s fit to show

if not,

 you’ve just got

to tell me to Stop!

The Quints'nClem Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Quints'nClem

original watercolor Brass Quintet: 10" x 14"

Conch en Fa

There once was a seashell named Conch

Who was lonely, displeased with his lot

He puffed out his cheek

Buzzed a low mellow screech

Now he’s part of the rock group “Conch-crete”

The Brass Street Boys Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Brass Street Boys

original watercolor cityscape w/instuments: 10" x 14"

 Tuba or Not Tuba

If the Tuba can’t solo

He just won’t play

He takes his music

And stomps away

With a deep rumbling sound

He slumps in his case..

Are you like a tuba

With his sulky ways

3 French Hens and a Horn Watercolors by Bertie Brown

3 French Hens and a Horn

original drawing w/horn and chickens: 22" x 30"

back in the day

I remember we played

with marbles and jacks

and baseballs and bats

but sometimes I recall

though I tried hard to stall

I had to apply

my  lip

to the tip

of my tarnished old horn

and try not to sound

too bad or forlorn

much later I found

practice, patience plus time

would greatly improve

my horn teacher’s mood!

The Old Rugged Cross Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Old Rugged Cross

original watercolor still life w/cello/piano: 9" x 12"

the piano is back

and these are the facts

there’s still lots to do

with a keyboard that’s new

but vintage is in

what a glorious thing

and bowing the strings

neath a cross fairly sings

of the hope old hymns bring

of our Savior and King

Rock Stars Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Rock Stars

original wtercolor musical still life w/drums, guitar, piano: 12" x 12"

Drummer’s Dilemma

There’s drums a-plenty

For the drumming fanatic

From the triplet set’s least

To the bass drum, that beast,

The choices never cease!

With notes so sporadic

And sometimes exotic

It can be hypnotic

But always drum-atic!

UUCon Watercolors by Bertie Brown

UUCon
original watercolor ukulele soiree: 9" x 12"

there once was a girl named BB
who decided a ukulele
would be just the thing
to hasten on spring
now she’s strummin’ with Uke Uprising
yes it’s true that this girl named BB
once played horn in her town’s symphony
when she lost her good buzz
she took up uke cuzz
ukers don’t fret, they sing and they strum!
so come to the Ukulele
Uprising and surely you’ll see
that strumming the uke
with this friendly group
is great fun on Tuesday eve’nings

January 74 Watercolors by Bertie Brown

January 74
original still life watercolor w/violin, apples, oranges: 15" x 15"

there’s still stuff to do
in swinter it’s true
but sometimes i must
simply adjust
my outlook on work
and shirk all that work
take time to relax
look forward, think back
embrace solitude
consider my mood
it’s wintertime blues

a soul searching cruise

Rhythm 'n Blues Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Rhythm 'n Blues
original musical motif watercolor w/drumset, guitars: 8" x 10"

there’s rhythm in blues
guitars and drums, too
and their hope is that
there’s payment in cash
they pass around notes
like we did in school
but these notes, they sing
'tis a harmonious thing!

Dynamic Duo Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Dynamic Duo
original watercolor musical motif w/horn, trumpet: 18" x 22"

Chicken Tricks
you cannot be chicken
if you play french horn
unless you are thinkin’
you’d like a good lickin’
when that horn does balk
sounding out a loud squawk
and Beethoven rolls over

as you shrug your shoulder

The Music of the Spheres Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Music of the Spheres
original watercolor still life w/horn, baubles: 22" x 20 1/2"

Going Solo
The horn stands alone
Not lost or forlorn
Just a confident fellow
Shiny outside
Inside, mellow.
Its song, so melodious
With notes as they soar
But can be quite odious
When notes don’t sound sure
One thing is certain
With a rising stage curtain
The horn likes to play

In a most excellent way!

Piano Man Musical Motif Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Piano Man
original watercolor w/horn, piano, violin, Mozart: 11" x 14"

The Maestro’s Woes
Horns near the backdrop
The Strings own the front spots
Right in the center
Are the Woodwind renters
Drums and percussion
Beat out the instructions
Harp and Celesta
Join in their discussions...
Playing together for better or worse
Learning the music
They all must rehearse
Perfecting rhythms
Some tricky, some fun
All of the orchestra
Playing as one...
Allegretto
Meno mosso
And Con Brio, too
Mezzo, Piano, Fortissimo Piu
We love all those ways
To play!
Tubas and trombones
Will fight for their turf
Oboes with puffed cheeks
Look ready to burst
Flutes, Clarinets
The Violas, Trumpets
All so polite
As they try not to fight.....
Instruments waiting for Maestro to cue
Watching the down beat
His hand in their view
A Violin shrieks
A clarinet squeaks
Scowls from the Maestro
But onward they go...
When notes don’t sing
From the high strings
Or a horn butts in
The music continues
The Maestro in tow
The audience shouts
“Bravo!”

Coronation Station Musical Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Coronation Station
original musical motif still life w/trumpet, violin, piano: 11" x 14"

would a trumpet
be a strumpet
if she played a loose lipped jig
while her brother
played another
more pretentious tight hipped gig
would a trumpet
eat a crumpet
while she played a high brow dig
could a strumpet
be a pundit
if she shed her platinum wig?
would a trumpet
be a strumpet
if she wore one high heeled shoe
could a crumpet
 clog a trumpet

if it got stuck in her tube?

Trumped by the Sax Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Trumped by the Sax
original watercolor still life w/trumpet, sax:21" x 14"

a musician displays
exhibitionist ways
but it’s all okay
‘cause music filled days
and nights do remain
quite high on our list
of things we like best
so please don’t insist

we cease and desist!

Trumped by Sax Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Trumped by Sax
original watercolor still life w/trumpet/sax: 11" x 14"

this winter’s so long
it’s long in the tooth
let’s give it a shove
let’s give it the boot!
my heating bill’s HUGE
yet my house is cold
I’m grumpy like Scrooge
with a frozen billfold…
there’s snow on my roof
and ice in my veins
my fingers, I’ve proof
are going insane!
they’re sending their prints
to sunnier climes
I think I’ll insist
I join them in this
we’ll drive ‘till we find
a welcoming spot
long on sunshine

with no winter bite!

Horn en Fa Musical Motif Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Horn en Fa
original musical motif watercolor w/horn: 11" x 14"

The French Conundrum
The French Horn is happy
Wherever it plays
From Woodwinds and Brass
To  the Strings with such class
Yes, the instruments agree
It’s sound does so please
And most of the time
The horn is quite amiable
But it can get unruly

And downright unplayable!

A Moment in Time Watercolors by Bertie Brown

A Moment in Time
original watercolor still life w/violin, sunflower, pears: 11" x 15"
alchemy
posers and pears
a violin with flare
a nip and a tuck
with fabric and stuff
stripes more than one
when does it become
a still life that’s done
when all is imbued
with bright cheery hues
so hoping this view
is pleasing to you!
