Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

DownTown City-scape Watercolors by Bertie Brown

DownTown

original watercolor cityscape/NY: 10" x 14"

Play Away

it’s really okay

to chill out and play

we all know we should

(that is understood)

but still we forget

and totally get

ourselves in fun debt

we think if we could

buy us some fun

then surely we would

feel wonderf’ly good

Meryl Street Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Meryl Street

original watercolor cityscape/NY: 10" x 14"

The cars and the peeps

on NY city streets

are frantic and rhythmic

and sometimes cataclysmic

horns honking, tires screeching

peeps late for a meeting

it's a love/hate affair

With city-life there.

Downtown Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Downtown

original watercolor cityscape: 8" x 10"

Tuff Stuff

There once was a spring breeze named Sough

Not harsh nor decidedly tough

He nudged winter’s huff

Said “pick up your stuff”

And blew it away with a puff!

Uptown Girl Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Uptown Girl

original watercolor NY cityscape: 12" x 16"

Practice makes better

But perfect?

Not ever...

Especially if painting

Is what you can do

You’ll prob’ly improve

But that’s questionable, too

My advice to you

Buy a BertieBrown or 2

into the Winds Watercolors by Bertie Brown

into the Winds

original watercolor cityscape with woodwinds: 10" x 14"

what ho!

i’m gonna say this

gettin’ older is so

not tops on my list

seems there are some peeps

pollyannas and such

who’ll tell you how sweet

it is, that’s a bunch

of crap, oh ‘tis true

there are a few perks

please don’t misconstrue

we work out, not work

and nap after noon

there’s grandies to keep

that’s work that we seek

it helps keep us fit

and quick on our feet

but losses do come

that’s harsh, and a fact

‘though dismissed by some,

i’ve got much less tact

so try if you can

to put off old age

‘cause footloose it seems

ain’t quite fancy free

Young Girls are Comin' to the Canyons Cityscape Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Young Girls are Comin' to the Canyons

original watercolor cityscape, NY:: 10" x 14"

Sophie and I

are questioning this

could June ever be

more perfect.... what bliss!

with cool linen days

sun dried, whitened bright

and navy blue nights

glitter sprinkled, twinkling lights

‘though we do love summer’s song

when those H’s* come on strong

we can find fault in this

‘though we’d never throw a fit...

The WindyCity Times Square Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The WindyCity Times Square

original watercolor woodwind scape: 10" x 14"

Quints Jam

The woodwind Quintet

Is surprised and upset

That a brass French Horn-et

Is allowed on their set

But the French Horn explained

While the Woodwinds complained

That his rich rounded sound

Keeps the Woodwinds anchored down

So they changed all their plans

And that’s how it began

For the “Woodwind Quints Jam”

NYBlues Watercolors by Bertie Brown

 NY Blues
original watercolor NYcityscape: 8" x 10

tis relative-ly
a new work, you see
with something that’s old
a shape big and bold
and some that are new
with int’resting hues
borrowed from yet
a past series set
hmmm...
it’s deja vu
for those orange and blues!

Brooklyn's Bridge Watercolors by Bertie Brown

 Brooklyn's Bridge
original watercolor cityscape; NY: 8" x 10"
Fine Whine
my sister says
you are gonna get it
my sister says
you get a weather credit
my sister says
when this winter has been bedded
and the spring is this way headed
it will be so fine
the temps so kind you’ll  renounce all your whine...

NY State of Mind Watercolors by Bertie Brown

 NY State of Mind
original watercolor cityscape: NY: 12" x 15"

Sophie and I know
that sometimes it’s best
to simply allow
a painting to rest
it may not be done
though there are intense
and beautiful hues
that seem to make sense
we want to be sure
we have to confess
that this work secures
it’s soulful-ishness

NY State of Mind Cityscape Watercolors by Bertie Brown

NY State of Mind
original watercolor cityscape: 16" x 20"

Sophie says
BB what’cha doin’?
BB says
lookin’ all around
and this is what I’ve found
the fact is this
I’ve made a list
of works I love
that did not miss
the mark I set
for sure success
and though I know
bragadocio
is not allowed
I’ll not be cowed
I’ve got a LOT
that hit the spot
that’s great, you say
but not so, hey
It’s hard to paint
more-better-best
‘cause that’s a test
that makes me sweat!

The Sidewalks of NY Cityscape Watercolors by Daily Painter Bertie Brown

The Sidewalks of NY
original watercolor cityscape: 11" x 14"

The Sidewalks of NY
original watercolor cityscape: 11" x 14"

In the good ol’ summertime
it’s a fine thing so sublime
to take a walk
a plein air stalk
on the sidewalks of NY
there’s no one else around
as we put our stuff on the ground
we sit and paint
 a cityscape
we hope sells in a gall’ry downtown!

Uptown Gilrs NY Cityscapes by Daily Painter Bertie Brown

Uptown Girls
original watercolor NY cityscape: 16" x 20"

NY State of Mind
original watercolor NY cityscape: 7" x 11"

Sophie and I
were sun soaked and bored
as we stood and looked
out our playroom door
let’s take a trip
‘twill be our respit
from summer’s intense
heat wave visit
we’ll walk up the Fifth
where buildings so high
look just like they pierce
the clouds in the sky
we’ll visit Times Square
take in all the sights
we do wish “Les Mis”
Was playing tonight
we’ll quicken our steps
‘cause we’ve got to get
ourselves to the Met
to see the Cezannes, Degas’ and Mo-nets!
Our day was soon gone
we took the train home
our memories intact
prints in our backpacks
this mini-vacation
was great stimulation
the ride home we happily
spent dozing and napping
