Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Playthings Musical Instrument Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Playthings
original watercolor with muiscal instruments, horn/trumpet, paints, brushes: 18" x 22"

Practice makes better
But perfect?
Not ever...
Especially if painting
Is what you can do
You’ll prob’ly improve
But that’s questionable, too
My advice to you

Buy a Bertie Brown or two!

All That Jazz Watercolors by Bertie Brown

All That Jazz
original watercolor instruments, piano/trumpet/trombone, drums: 17" x 17"

There’s rhythm in Blues
drums, keyboard and brass
they’re hoping that, too
there’s payment in cash
they pass around notes
like we did in school
but these notes are ‘cool’
they don't follow rules!

Christmas Brass Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Christmas Brass
original watercolor musical motif w/trombone, trumpet, horn: 10" x 14"

Sophie Says
what ho
I just want to know
who’s lying in that manger bed
with a stable roof o’er His head
and why are there reindeer
flying in the night sky
with a guy in a sleigh
following close behind
And
there’s a tree in our house
with packages strewn about
that I’m not s’posed to touch
and there seems to be such
a decorating fuss
it’s confusing, you know
for a little kid so
I’ll just ask BB
I’m hoping that she
can explain it to me!

Horns of Note Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Horns of Note
original watercolor musical iinstrument painting: 17" x 23"

don’t want knickknacks
don’t want toys
don’t need rich snacks
to enjoy
just stop by
and we’ll spend time
drinking tea
or glass of wine
catching up
on days gone by
which look better
from behind!
but
if you MUST
buy me some stuff
then i insist
a DickBlick gift
card will do the trick!

All That Jazz Watercolors by Bertie Brown

All That Jazz
originalmusical motif watercolor w/drums, trombone, trumpet, piano, sax: 8" x 10"

 Drummer’s Dilemma
There’s drums a-plenty
For the drumming fanatic
From the triplet set’s least
To the bass drum, that beast
The choices never cease
With notes so sporadic
And sometimes exotic
It can be hypnotic

But always drum-atic!

Music'l Mash Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Music'l Mash
original watercolor with trumpet, cone, flugelhorn: 11" x 12 1/2"

brass blast
would a trumpet
be a strumpet
if she played a loose lipped jig
while her brother
played another
more pretentious tight hipped gig

would a trumpet
eat a crumpet
while she played a high brow dig
could a strumpet
be a pundit
if she shed her platinum wig?

would a trumpet
be a strumpet
if she wore one high heeled shoe
could a crumpet
 clog a trumpet

if it got stuck in her tube?

Classy Brass Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Classy Brass
original watercolor musical still life w/horn, trumpet, trombone: 11" x 14"

absolutely resolute
i’m absolutely certain
some truth is indisputable
and strictly put imputable
so don’t go all refutable
i don’t want your rebuttable
that verbal hyper babbable
you’re so above reproachable
and also un-correctable
see that’s just irresponsible
and truly indefensible
we all could be sympatico

if y’all weren’t so emphatico

Classy Brass Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Classy Brass
original watercolor still life w/horn, trumpet: 18" x 22"

Bobbie Corno
an alias don’cha know
doesn’t tiptoe around
like others he’s found
but plays out right proud
and oft’ times quite loud
‘cause really, why doubt
and fumble about
with 16 feet of tubing
and a bell worthy of spewing
forth plenty of sound
more beauteous, unbound

than others, hands down!

Dynamic Duo Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Dynamic Duo
original watercolor musical motif w/horn, trumpet: 18" x 22"

Chicken Tricks
you cannot be chicken
if you play french horn
unless you are thinkin’
you’d like a good lickin’
when that horn does balk
sounding out a loud squawk
and Beethoven rolls over

as you shrug your shoulder

The Soloist Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Soloist
original watercolor w/trumpet player: 9" x 12"

the trumpet's such a brassy fellow
when played he sings notes high, not mellow
when muted
 a new sound's instituted
and when there’s nothing left to play
he simply packs himself away

Instrumental Junque Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Instrumental Junque
original watercolor still life w/horn/cornet:  12" x 18"
Reveille Reverie
morning runs unfold
the music in my soul
as meandering stream melodies
join humming meadow harmonies
my footsteps add the rhythm

and my heart sings along with’m..

Trumped by the Sax Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Trumped by the Sax
original watercolor still life w/trumpet, sax:21" x 14"

a musician displays
exhibitionist ways
but it’s all okay
‘cause music filled days
and nights do remain
quite high on our list
of things we like best
so please don’t insist

we cease and desist!

Trumped by Sax Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Trumped by Sax
original watercolor still life w/trumpet/sax: 11" x 14"

this winter’s so long
it’s long in the tooth
let’s give it a shove
let’s give it the boot!
my heating bill’s HUGE
yet my house is cold
I’m grumpy like Scrooge
with a frozen billfold…
there’s snow on my roof
and ice in my veins
my fingers, I’ve proof
are going insane!
they’re sending their prints
to sunnier climes
I think I’ll insist
I join them in this
we’ll drive ‘till we find
a welcoming spot
long on sunshine

with no winter bite!

Evensong Musical Motif Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Evensong
original watercolor musical motif w/horn, trumpet: 18" x 22"

back in the day
I remember we played
with marbles and jacks
and baseballs and bats
but sometimes I recall
though I tried hard to stall
I had to apply
my  lip
to the tip
of my tarnished old horn
and try not to sound
too bad or forlorn
much later I found
practice, patience plus time
would greatly improve
my horn teacher’s mood!

Duet at Rest Musical Motif Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Duet at Rest
original watercolor still life w/horn, trumpet: 23" x 19"

back in school
we learned the rule
that there were cliques
a specialty list
of kids way cool
though we weren’t fools
our own gene pools
just did not rule
we weren’t as blessed
our confidence less
we weren’t sure why
and could not guess
but since I've grown
I have been known
to play horn well
for quite a spell
now as I paint
I simply state
this art I make
is instrumentally
a quirk of fate

Inter-Resting Musical Motif Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Inter-Resting
original watercolor still life w/horn, trumpet: 11" x 15"

we’ve got the blues,
Sophie, me too
it’s way too cold
but what can we do
I think we’ll paint
a still life today
until those blues

they just go away.....
