Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Beach Front Property Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Beach Front Property
original watercolor seascape: 10" x 14"

in the beginning
we all loved the sun
we couldn’t get enough
we were never quite “done”
our faces were bronzed
our hair sun-streaked gold
our innocence reigned
we’d never grow old
but time has a way
a mean streak, I’d say,
of hastening the days
that youth does betray
so now that we’re old
or older, to wit,
we’re gonna wise up

and use sunscreen, just a bit...

On The Rocks Watercolors by Bertie Brown

On The Rocks
original watercolor seascape/Rockport, MA: 8" x 10"

Rockport Fever
Sophie and I
Are planning a trip
To Gloucester and Rockport
And, yes, Bearskin Neck
We’ll gaze at the ocean
Climb over the rocks
Paint Motif Number One
At the edge of the docks
We’ll dip our big toe
In the cold ocean water
Go swimming???
Are you kidding
It’s gotta get hotter
We’ll head to Pigeon Cove
Walk the breakwater above
Then buy fresh lobster
At the Co-op down below
With more things to do
More scenes to be viewed
We’ll need much more time
Than the plan we designed
So we’re savin’ our pennies
Our nickels and dimes
(We know it’s not much
But we’re tryin’ to rhyme)
For our piece of the Rock
Or a spot on the dock
Of Rockport’s scenic town

The best place we’ve found......

Symphony in Sea
original watercolor seascape: 12" x 16"

by the sea
the sun shining on me
boist'rous sea
mysteries
in the ocean abyss
where there's no
ice and snow
oh i'd happily go
but for now
polar WOW
time to flee the snow plow
i need June
please come soon
lest i fear i am doomed!

Rockport MA Harbor Seascape Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Rockport MA Harbor
original watercolor seascape/Rockport, MA : 9" x 12"

Buoy Joy
Buoys will be buoys
In all shapes and sizes
Just like us girls
Despite our disguises
Buoys are like boxers
Ducking and weaving
Treading ocean waters
With strong currents heaving
The stripes that they wear
Go round and around
They look quite rotund
 But they don’t much care
They do a sun dance
Giving tides not a glance
They’re anchored from below
And they won’t let go
They do their job joyously

Behaving so buoy-ishly!

Coast Guard Seascape Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Coast Guard
original seascape watercolor Rockport, MA: 7" x 11"
On the Rocks
oh  my Sophie and me
we’d much rather be
on the rocks
by the docks
of Cape Ann by the Sea
and when a Nor’easter
those bellowing blows
nip at our keasters
our noses and toes
we’ll just hold on tight
as it wails day and night
till it blows out to sea
and safe we will be...

The Buoys of Bearskin Neck by Pennsylvania Daily painter Bertie Brown - Art is Instrumental

The Buoys of Bearskin Neck

original watercolor maritime landscape/Rockport: 14" x 11"

Floats, traps

Lobsterman shacks

Ropes, tacks

Fishing knick-knacks

Boots, slickers

Lobsterman knickers

There’s even a place

For trusty duct tape

And WD 40

They’ve got it, surely

All this and more

Behind windows and doors

Filling crannies and nooks

There’s prob’ly some books

Of maritime knots

In case they forgot

The instructions they got

From Pop and Grandpop

So remember this stuff

When you’re all in a huff

As you pay lots of bucks

For that Lobster you bought

At the boat dock co-op!

Lobsterman Lairs by Bertie brown

Buoys Will be Buoys
original:7"w x 10 1/2"h

Buoy Joy

Buoys will be buoys

In all shapes and sizes

Just like us girls

Despite our disguises

Buoys are like boxers

Ducking and weaving

Treading ocean waters

With currents fairly heaving

The stripes that they wear

Go round and around

They look quite rotund

(Gasp) but they don’t really care

They do a sun dance

Giving those tides not a glance

They’re anchored from below

And they won’t let go

They do their job joyously

As they behave so buoy-ishly!

Lobsterman Lairs

original: 13 1/2"w x 10 1/2"h

Symphony in Sea Major

Lobster buoys afloat

As art dotting coves and boats

Decorating New England’s coast

With quirky colors its fishermen boast

And sublime northern light

Envelopes the sights

While dancing on tides

That toss those floats

From side to side

Cormorants and gulls line up on the rocks

By the boats, or the docks

As they noisily wait

For some leftover bait

Granite boulders edge the shores

Firm foundations that endure

An applauding boisterous sea
BRAVO!

What a glorious symphony!
