Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

The GoodBye Girls Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Goodbye Girls

original watercolor sunflowers: 10" x 14"

Ackkk!

 the sun’s in retreat

giving me the cold shoulder

our summer romance

is apparently over

gone are the sundrops

warming my face

menacing shadows

have taken their place

 cobalt blue breezes

rustle about

autumn is coming

of that there’s no doubt

my sunflowers are ruined

their beauty in tatters

seeds, petals, leaves

lie tossed about, scattered

i notice the dance

of those spurious squirrels

as they snatch the remains

of my golden sun girls

more quickly than ants

at a picnic, they advance

and I thought that finches

were sunflower grinches!

now I’m left all alone

‘neath a dry, crumbling wall

where my sunflowers had stood

majestic and tall

so my task is to wait

for this fact I hold dear

they’ll be back next year

with more summertime cheer!

Rooted'n Grounded Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Rooted'n Grounded

original watercolor sunflowers: 9" x 12"

Cavalier about Cheer

my sunspotted girls

have got to admit

they long for a world

where they could just sit

they’ve got but one shoe

though it’s a great fit

a minute without it

would help quite a bit

their long leggy-ness

can cause some back strain

a slight dizzy-ness

and dull aching pain

but stand there they do

displaying such cheer

for one month or two

this time of the year

it’s quite cavalier

and exhausting, I fear

but sunnies don't care

'cause they like to share!

Horns*R*Us/WasMe French Horn Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Horns*R*Us/WasMe

original watercolor french horn: 10" x 14"

Conch en Fa

There once was seashell named Conch

Who was lonely and displeased with his lot

So he puffed out his cheek

Buzzed a low mellow screech

Now he’s part of the rock group “Conch-crete”

Grounded Sunnies Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Grounded Sunnies

original watercolor sunflowers: 10" x 14"

now the sunny said

to his buddies in the bed

why can’t we simply try

to lay our views aside

let’s get along today

‘cause that’s the better way

to live in peace and harmony

will benefit our karma, see

And the Beet Goes On Watercolors by Bertie Brown

And the Beet Goes On

original watercolor beets: 8" x 10"

Sophie said, Let’s use our new paints today

Carmine and Windsor blue

Areolin too

What could we paint

With our trio so quaint

Beets, I think, would work out just great

Wet applications

Give us saturations

Int’resting patterns

With water and spatters

Red, blue and yellow

Make fine pallet-fellows

Beets truly blush

 Their cheeks red and lush

And shades of their foliage

In green and gold-ish

Finish off the work

The red beets  vital

A rich red recital

Is now on display

Today!

Beetnix Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Beetnix

original watercolor beets: 9" x 12"

I forget

do gnus

rhyme with canoes

or maybe baboons

and what is the need

if you could, tell me please

of the extra L'd Llama

for it’s silent, do you see

is it oh so much better

to own one more letter

and the Beet, actual-ly

goes on,  factual-ly

Pears Squared Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Pears Squared

original watercolor pears: 9" x 11"

as summer reclines

in translucent honey haze

autumn comes alive

with transparent amber days

inky blue nights

fill infinite skies

cool winds collide

pushing summer aside

from translucent to transparent

these transitions are inherent

seasons come and they go

with their foibles quite apparent

Sunny Reposers Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

SunnyReposers

original watercolor sunflowers: 9" x 12"

Simple Girls

my sunflower girls

are simple and yet

the beauty they share

is simply the best

their petals, like bonnets,

are sun drenched and golden

it’s like someone spread

sweet butter upon ‘em

they don’t like to squint

so they always wear shades

but sunblock is not

their choice, they admit

they follow the sun

from morning till night

then rest in their beds

until the day light

that’s how it’s been done

it’s simply their way

for all of their kin

and all of their days
