Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Lancaster County Crop Stop Landscape Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Lancaster County Crop Stop
original watercolor landscape: 11" x 14"

A Summer Romance
Time to sit back
Look forward,
Relax...
Jasmine and honeysuckle
Scents of seduction
Flirty Fireflies wink
Quick bursts of combustion
Warm summer nights
A cashmere caress
Sun soaked daylight
No hint of duress
‘Tis summer’s sun-dance

A welcome romance.

NY State of Mind Cityscape Watercolors by Bertie Brown

NY State of Mind
original watercolor cityscape: 16" x 20"

Sophie says
BB what’cha doin’?
BB says
lookin’ all around
and this is what I’ve found
the fact is this
I’ve made a list
of works I love
that did not miss
the mark I set
for sure success
and though I know
bragadocio
is not allowed
I’ll not be cowed
I’ve got a LOT
that hit the spot
that’s great, you say
but not so, hey
It’s hard to paint
more-better-best
‘cause that’s a test
that makes me sweat!

Playthings Musical Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Playthings
original watercolor still life w/horn
SOLD!
Going Solo
The horn stands alone
Not lost or forlorn
Just a confident fellow
Shiny outside
Inside, mellow.
Its song, so melodious
With notes that do soar
But can be quite odious
When notes don’t sound sure
One thing is certain
With a rising stage curtain
The horn likes to play

In a most excellent way!

Indigo Imaging Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Indigo Imaging
original watercolor w/apples: 11" x 14"

a gentle place
for quiet thoughts
and simple talks
an apple, two?

refreshed, renewed
we’ve work to do
so on we press
inspired no less
by cooler days

of autumn-ness

Cavalier Com-Posers Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Cavalier Com-Posers
original watercolor sunflowers: 15" x 22"

Cavalier about Cheer
my sunflower girls
have got to admit
they long for a world
where they could just sit
they’ve got but one shoe
though it’s a great fit
a minute without it
would help quite a bit
their long leggy-ness
can cause some back strain
and slight dizzy-ness
or dull aching pain
but stand there they do
displaying such cheer
for one month or two
this time of the year
it’s quite cavalier

and exhausting, I fear!

The Well-Tempered Cat-Nap Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The Well-Tempered Cat-Nap
original watercolor w/cat, piano, poppies: 8" x 11"

Ackkk!
 the sun’s in retreat
giving me the cold shoulder
this summer romance
is apparently over
gone are the sundrops
warming my face
menacing shadows
have taken their place
 cobalt blue breezes
rustle about
autumn is coming
of that there’s no doubt
my sunflowers are ruined
their beauty in tatters
seeds, petals, leaves
lie tossed about, scattered
i notice the dance
of those spurious squirrels
as they snatch the remains
of my golden sun girls
more quickly than ants
at a picnic, they advance
and I thought that finches
were sunflower grinches!
now I’m left all alone
‘neath a dry, crumbling wall
where my sunflowers once stood
majestic and tall
i’ll try not to fear
as a hope becomes clear
they’ll be back next year
with more summertime cheer!
