Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Beethoven or Bust Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Beethoven or Bust
original musical still life w/horn, Beethoven bust: 18" x 22"

The French Conundrum
The French Horn is happy
Wherever it plays
From Woodwinds and Brass
To  the Strings with such class.
Yes, the instruments agree
That it’s sound does so please.
And most of the time
The horn is quite amiable
But it can get unruly

And downright unplayable!

Accordion to My Sister Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Knitter Sitter                                    Accordion to My Sister
original watercolor knitter/ accordionist: 8" x 10"
my sister’s a knitter
a fine knitter sitter
she sits and she clicks
those long shiny sticks
coaxing mile after mile
of yarn into tricks
her magical styles
of socks called argyles
and mittens and vests
are simply the BEST
she expertly winds
these loops into gear
that keep us quite warm

during COLD winters here

Musically Inclined Series (Flugelhorn) by Bertie Brown

Musically Inclined

original: 15 1/2"w x 11 1/2"h

Flugelhorn

The Flugelhorn’s not a copycat

(But you already do know that)

Not a trumpet or cornet

Or a curvy French Horn-et

Distinctive and unique

It has its own mystique..

The Flugelhorn can choose

A jazz tune or the blues

With a certainty of style

That makes me want to nod

And smile...

Musically Inclined (Series) by Bertie Brown

Musically Inclined

Renaissance Girls

Sophie and I

Are jubilant and excited

‘Cause we ordered some DVDs

That were speedily expedited...

“HBO presents Classical Baby”

For Music, Art, Dance

And poetry!

We’re not leaving anything to chance!

Now there never was a doubt

Renaissance girls,

That’s what we’re all about!

So we’re off for some viewing

As our artistic lives

We are pursuing.....

Favorite Things

Molly and Ozzie and Sophie and me

Comfy and cozy

And ready to read

Satin hemmed blankets

Tugged up to our chins

These and much more are our favorite things...

Cabled wool sweaters

Are just right for me

Fleece is much better

For Sophie’s soft cheek

Long runs and brisk walks

Short stories and long talks

Warm milk for Sophie

And sweet tea for me....

Mozart and Beethoven

Bach and Bartok

Dancing and singing

To classics and pop

Playing the French Horn

I liked that a lot

These and much more

Are our favorite things.....

When cold winds blow

And the skies snow

And we get the blues

We pick up our brushes

Our paper and paints

And paint till those blues

We loose!

Drummer’s Dilemma

There’s drums a-plenty

For the drumming fanatic

From the triplet set’s least

To the bass drum, that beast,

The choices never cease!

With notes so sporadic

And sometimes exotic

It can be hypnotic

But always drum-atic!

Dynamic Duo

That’s the name

The violin and piano

Were given in their fame

They play well together

Then each plays alone

One plucks and bows

The other strikes keys for tones

With fervent fingers flying

Over keyboard and bridge

The audience is left sighing

Applauding all that they did!

Going Solo

The horn stands alone

Neither lost nor forlorn

Just a confident fellow

Shining outside

Inside, mellow.

Its song is melodious

With high notes that soar

But can be quite odious

When notes don’t sound sure

One thing is certain

With a rising stage curtain

The horn likes to play

The solos he’s given

In a most excellent way!
