Com-Posers Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Com-Posers
original watercolor sunflowers: 15" x 17"
Creature Comforts
fat and sassy, finches golden
buzzing bees, their bellies bulgin'
full to bursting butterflies
nap and snooze ‘neath sunny skies
sated creatures one and all
thank those girls who stand so tall
these are the days we’ve waited for
and when they’re gone, we’ll long for more…

Gold Finches - No Innocence Mission
oh those finches
such sunflower grinches
dangling on the edge
of my sunflowers heads
they yank off the petals
that fall to my feet
and devour those seeds
a summertime treat
then off they flee
through the air to their lairs....
after such a fiesta,
they need a siesta!

Com-Posers Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Com-Posers
original watercolor sunflowers: 15" x 17"
a bevy of bees
sip nectar, sneak about
balletic butterflies
nibble coyly, wings spread out
we’re down in the ‘hood’
the ambience, good
we all share this space
extolling its' grace
but finches, those grinches
just don’t play the game
they swoop in a fury
causing many to scurry
the petals they strip
snip nip and rip
the shells from the seeds
they spit at my feet
fine-ly they flee
those snippy birdies
and all of us "B"s
are grateful returnees
it all happens here
this summer fiesta
at BB’s Belly deli
my haven of resta!

Some Enchanted Evening Landscape Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Some Enchanted Evening

A View From the High C’s
Is where I’ll be
With sketchbook in hand
Though it’s not what I planned
As I once took my place
In the second horn space
Or I played in the band
Or a show
With the pit crew way below...
But this view’s not so bad
There’s no stress to be had
Here in the Fulton’s lofty lairs
Above the balcony
And second stairs
Now the music that surrounds
These halls and abounds
Gives my drawings their sound
And I’m glad just to see
This view from the high C’s...
BB’10
huh? now wait
it’s okay?
not so,
i’m afraid
this view’s getting old
my heart’s growing cold
‘though art feeds the soul
creatively, i’m told
but music, for me
gave generously
and filled up that need
that let me, be me
oh yes, i am blessed
and thankful no less
my paintings abound
so i’m not bereft
still
there lives a space
an empty embrace
where melodies waste
there’s no music, not a trace
so i’ve gotta see
what i’ve gotta do
to get back to me
some lost harmony

Guardin' Girl Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Guardin' Girl : 8" x 11"

original watercolor sunflowers and landscape
Eminent Domain
is eminent domain
something finches disdain
as they each stake their claim
to my sunflowers’ fame
don’t they have a clue
I have etiquette rules
they routinely eschew
behaving so RUDE
I’d tell them to flee
‘cause they’re making a scene
and a mess at my feet
spitting shells from their beaks
but they are rather cute
in their black and gold suits
and their hollers and hoots
sound like piccolo flutes!

Summer Sisters Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Summer Sisters
original watercolor sunflowers: 15" x 15"
Goldfinch Grinch
My sunflower girls
Never use my sunblock
Nor do they apply
Suntan lotion a lot
They’re naturally golden
Their brown faces boastin’
Their fearless devotion
To sunshine in motion
But there are some days
They have to confess
A shot of pest spray
Would be their best bet
For shoo-ing away
Gold finches of prey
‘Cause finches
Are Grinches
As they yank pull and splay
The petals and bonnets
My sunflowers boast
In my poems and sonnets
Why couldn’t they just
Gather seeds without fuss....

What HO!
say it’s not so
that sound that i hear
humming tunes that i fear
and what’s that i see
in the scene before me
a dry sculpted shell
of a locust…what the ‘L?
it’s just but July
my mind fairly cries
i need lots more time
and summer sunshine
what solace i find
in sunflowers is mine
so locusts, you stop
your late summer talk
my backyard’s all dressed
and dandied it’s best
so let me enjoy
my well deserved rest

Cavalier about Cheer
my sunflower girls
have got to admit
they long for a world
where they could just sit
they’ve got but one shoe
though it’s a great fit
a minute without it
would help quite a bit
their long leggy-ness
can cause some back strain
and slight dizzy-ness
or dull aching pain
but stand there they do
displaying such cheer
for one month or two
this time of the year
it’s quite cavalier
and exhausting, I fear!

Anasquam Light, Gloucester, MA Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Anasquam Light
original watercolor seascape/ Annasquam Lighthouse, G;oucester, MA : 8" x 10"
Symphony in Sea Major
Lobster buoys afloat
Lighthouses as beacons
Decorating the coast
Sublime northern light
Enveloping the sights
While dancing on tides
Tossing boats and floats
From side to side
Cormorants and gulls
Line up on the rocks
By the boats, or the docks
As they noisily wait
For some leftover bait
Granite boulders endure
Protecting the shore
Applauding the sea
BRAVO!
BRAVO!
What a glorious symphony!

summer solstice
‘tis mid-summer to soon
what happened to June?
and July’s on the run
yet it’s hardly begun!
i don’t know about you
but I’m gonna assume
you’re distraught just like me
‘cause we love summer’s ease
i’m thinking we might
have to put up a fight
so when summertime ends
let’s begin it again
