February Fruit Cup Watercolors by Berie Brown
February Fruit Cup
original watercolor still life w/oranges, apples, bananas, lemon: 6 1/2" x 15"
yes, things are askew
but that’s acceptable, too
‘cause when it’s called art
reality departs
and my point of view
might convince even you
that some things can be
true for both you and me

The Music Room Watercolors by Bertie Brown
The Music Room
original drawing w/horn, mutes, music stand: 8" x 10"
Can you hear me now?
from dimples to pimples to wrinkles
and then
those once hard won triumphs
are insults instead
there’s coming of age
finding the way
and fam'ly and playing
and later creating
it’s boasting
then coasting
and loss once again
can You hear me, i said
i’m no longer fit
to see, hear or be
oh, just let me sit
can You hear me, i plead
when it feels said and done
those battles hard won
were most of the fun
now it’s coming undone
can You hear me, i fear
that You can’t, that’s okay
’twas only a day
among so many years

Glassified Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Glassified
original watercolor still life w/violin, horn, glass: 11" x 15"
Cold Front
The windows I’m closin’
my flowers need hosin’
it’s blisterin hot
not one cold spot
‘cept here by the door
of the freezer in the store
where I pretend to stock up
on creamsicle pops
but truth to be told
it’s just good to feel cold!

Winter Blues Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Winter Blues
original watercolor still life w/bottles, glass: 13" x 11"
“Rhapsody in Blue”
Was our music today
Sophie and I thrilled
To the opening way
That clarinet soared
Through an octave and more...
We set up a still life
With lots of great blues
We have so much fabric
It’s hard just to choose
Then added some sass
A box and a tie
Four bottles, a glass
It looked oh so fine
We hummed to the tunes
While painting till noon
Sophie, my rhapsody
A five year old muse
Gerschwin and Orchestra
Playin’ his blues!

Surrounded Still Life Watercolor by Bertie Brown
Surrounded
original watercolor still life w/glass: 15" x 15"
Still Life Sketch
original drawing w/brushes, paint tubes: 10" x 12"
Sophie and I know
that sometimes it’s best
to simply allow
a painting to rest
it may not be done
though there are intense
and beautiful hues
that seem to make sense
we want to be sure
we have to confess
that each work secures
a soulful-ishness
