are Lightning Bugs buggers
that blink in the night
just summer time pluggers
getting on with their life
or did they endeavor
as quaint named Fire-Flies
to be thought of as better
alighting June skies
it’s really semantics
‘though slightly pedantic
that one name’s romantic
and rightly dram-antic
‘cause all of their frantic
light sparking antics
begins with a flame
on the butt, hence the name

With the sill and the sash
This is the way
A fine springtime day
Ought always to be
For two months or three....
Suites me perfectly

Simple Girls
my sunflower girls
are simple and yet
the beauty they share
is simply the best
their petals, like bonnets,
are sun drenched and golden
it’s like someone spread
sweet butter upon ‘em
they don’t like to squint
so they wear dark shades
but sunblock is not
their choice, they admit
they follow the sun
from morning till night
then rest in their beds
until the day light
that’s how it’s been done
it’s simply their way
for all of their kin
and all of their days

my lean and mean posers
can’t seem to get over
those past days of glory
their summer time story
so poignant and true
of lost beauty and youth
and innocence... too
yet still they stand tall
and insist that we all
salute this new age
their ‘maturity’ phase
with dignity and grace
and wisdom embraced

Sophie and I
Were shopping for clues
What could we possibly
Paint that is new
We passed by the eggplants
With nary a glance
We’ve done them before
Those red beets next door
Were also a boor
But then Sophie spied
From the corner of her eye
Some flowers in a bunch
And she had a hunch
Their blooms were so busy
Dancing this way and that
She said we should paint them
And work really fast!
We finished the painting
Our energy waning
We needed our nap
And knew it was time
To end this short rhyme!

that show off their wares
right out in the public
on lawns everywhere
seems they are quite stoic
in fact we agree
we think they’re heroic
as they proudly say
we shivered through winter
as we hoped and prayed
that we’d bloom away
through summer's sun-days!

The Golden Oldie Girl
my vibrant sunflowers
last week so spry
have bent down a bit
heaving a sigh
they hang down their leaves
it seems that they’re just
dry crumpled sheaves
about to be dust
there’s no use complaining
as they have no say
the season is changing
it’s all nature’s way
they lift up their chins
and give me a shrug
tighten their bonnets
with a sly little tug
my golden sunflowers
will soon cease to be
I cherish those hours
they’ve shared here with me
