Autumn-ness Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Autumn-ness
original watercolor still life w/sunflowers, vintage pitchers: 9" x 12"
Ode to an Old Friend
what ho
where did the years go
we just can’t be fixed
here at decade #6
not young nor carefree
we must learn to see
determin-edly
through love-filtered lens
ourselves as OLD friends!
we’ve been through a lot
those flashes were hot!
but give in, we’re not
we’ve got some regrets
but that stuff’s no sweat
where once we had pimples
we’re now sporting wrinkles
our firm derrieres
have gone off elsewheres
our chests and our chins?
they’ve sunk to our shins
and do you remember
well
can you recall
anything you need to
anything at all?
but still we can laugh
at some high school gaffe
and reminisce by the hours
the good, bad, ugly
while we sit and smugly
think we’ve now arrived
over 60, we’ve survived
and we’re not the faintest
nor least bit surprised...

A Radish a Day Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown
A Radish a Day
original watercolor still life w/radishes: 8" x 10"
Sophie and I
Were shopping for clues
What could we possibly
Paint that is new
We passed by the eggplants
With nary a glance
We’ve done them before
Those red beets next door
Looked just a bit poor
But then Sophie spied
From the corner of her eye
Some radishes in a bunch
And she had a hunch
Their leaves were so busy
Dancing this way and that
She said we should paint them
And work really fast!
We finished the painting
Our energy waning
We needed our nap
And knew it was time
To end this short rhyme!

The BB Bunch Watercolors by Bertie Brown
The BB Bunch
original watercolor floral work w/sunflowers: 9" x 12"
at the end of the day
i had but one thought
what happens to all
this work that i’ve wrought
‘twas always the best
of efforts i gave
my utmost, no less
and had some success
in music, of course
i’m wondering now
did it happen at all
if so, then how??
i gratefully bow
to Mozart and Bach
i painted to them,
and Beethoven, a lot
but what happens next?
i’ve time to fill
and miles to go
energy still
until, until....

The Brassy Bunch Watercolors by Bertie Brown
The Brassy Bunch
original watercolor and ink w/horn, tuba, trumpet, trombone: 8" x 10"
Conch en Fa
There once was seashell named Conch
Who was lonely and displeased with his lot
So he puffed out his cheek
Buzzed a low mellow screech
Now he’s part of the rock group “Conch-crete”

The Greeter Girl gets Winterized/ Watercolors and other stuff by Bertie Brown
what ho
Sophie and I
just want to know
who turned off the heat
and dimmed the lights low
where are the wool socks for our feet
our sweater sets
and turtlenecks
who said summer could retreat
we are cold and so distressed
why have days become so bleak
it’s time I guess
to hibernate until next June
and we both hope
that comes real soon!

Musical Props Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Musical Props
original ink and marker w/horn, trumpet, tuba, trombone: 6" x 8"
brass blast
would a trumpet
be a strumpet
if he played a loose lipped jig
while his brother
played another
more pretentious tight hipped gig
would a trumpet
eat a crumpet
while he played a high brow dig
could a strumpet
be a pundit
if she shed her platinum wig?
would a trumpet
and a strumpet
wear a 5 inch high heeled shoe
could a crumpet
clog a trumpet
if it got stuck in his tube?

Back to the Drawing Board Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Back to the Drawing Board
original figure drawing: 11" x 14"
back in school
we learned the rule
that there were cliques
a specialty list
of kids way cool
though we weren’t fools
our own gene pools
just did not rule
we weren’t as blessed
our confidence less
we weren’t sure why
and could not guess
but since I've grown
i have been known
to play horn well
for quite a spell
now as I draw
i do recall
that art and song
to ALL belong
