back in the day

I remember we played

with marbles and jacks

and baseballs and bats

but sometimes I recall

though I tried hard to stall 

I had to apply

my  lip 

to the tip

of my tarnished old horn

and try not to sound

too bad or forlorn

much later I found

practice, patience plus time

would greatly improve

my horn teacher’s mood!

we learned the rule

that there were cliques

a specialty list

of kids way cool

though we weren’t fools

our own gene pools

just did not rule

we weren’t as blessed

our confidence less

we weren’t sure why 

and could not guess

but since I've grown

I have been known

to play horn well

for quite a spell

now as I paint

I simply state

this art I make

is instrumentally

a quirk of fate
