Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

Butterfly Blues Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Butterfly Blues
original still life watercolor w/bottles, glass, sunflower: 15" x 22"

Favorite Things
Molly and Ozzie and Sophie and me
Comfy and cozy
And ready to paint
Satin hemmed blankets
Tugged up to our chins
These and much more are our favorite things...
Cabled wool sweaters
Are just right for me
Fleece is much better
For Sophie’s soft cheek
Long runs and brisk walks
Short stories and long talks
Cocoa for Sophie
And hot tea for me....
Mozart and Beethoven
Bach and Bartok
Dancing and singing
To classics and pop
Playing the French Horn
I liked that a lot
These and much more are our favorite things.....
When cold winds blow
And the skies snow
And we get the blues
We pick up our brushes
Our paper and paints
And paint till those blues

We loose!

Glass Menagerie Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Glass Menagerie
original still life watercolor w/glass, bottles: 15" x 20"

Ode To An Old Friend
what ho
where did the years go
we just can’t be fixed
here at decade #6
not young nor carefree
we must learn to see
determin-edly
through love-filtered lens
ourselves as OLD friends!
we’ve been through a lot
those flashes were hot!
but give in, we’re not
we’ve got some regrets
but that stuff’s no sweat
where once we had pimples
we’re now sporting wrinkles
our firm derrieres
have gone off elsewheres
our chests and our chins?
they’ve sunk to our shins
and do you remember
well
can you recall
anything you need to
anything at all?
but still we can laugh
at some high school gaffe
and reminisce by the hours
the good, bad, ugly
while we sit and smugly
think we’ve now arrived
o're 60, we’ve survived
and we’re not the faintest

nor least bit surprised...

Transparent Sea Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Transparent Sea
original still life watercolr w/glass: 11" x 14"

SUMMER DATE
how i hate
all this wait-
ing it must cease
and desist
right this minute
i insist
go away
please don’t stay
 make your exit
from this stage
while you may
in a good way
for you know you are not wanted
and we all have been so haunted
by all your boorish-ly arctic taunts........
come here straight
don’t be late
pack your bags, HASTE
take a plane
not a train
or the highway
i beseech
and entreat
please do hurry
to my doorstep
you simply must scurry
for i need you more than ever
would you hasten to endeavor
to bring your sunshiny ways to me.......
winter GO
 spring is so
ambigue-oh
summer come
with your fun
in the sun oh
we will be
final-ly
warm and cozy
oceanside
 under skies
blue and kind-ly.....
if it’s not too much to ask you
summer stay until the next June.....
2016 would that suit you???
Summer Please
Come see about Me!

Blues Cruise Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Blues Cruise
original still life watercolr w/glass: 12" x 12"

What ho!
the winds they were screamin’
my house it was leanin’
right into the flow
of last night's COLD blow
my windows were bulgin’
the furnace was pulsin'
that nor’easter’s hold
was keepin’ me cold
my goosebumps I declare
had goosebumps I swear
my nose it was froze

to my icicled toes

Winter Blues Still Life Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Winter Blues
original watercolor still life w/bottles, glass: 13" x 11"

“Rhapsody in Blue”
Was our music today
Sophie and I thrilled
To the opening way
That clarinet soared
Through an octave and more...
We set up a still life
With lots of great blues
We have so much fabric
It’s hard just to choose
Then added some sass
A box and a tie
Four bottles, a glass
It looked oh so fine
We hummed to the tunes
While painting till noon
Sophie, my rhapsody
A five year old muse
Gerschwin and Orchestra

Playin’ his blues!
