Methods and Madness

Sometimes I paint fast and loose

Other times quite controlled

The subject decides the method

But each work has the same goal:

A painting that is successful

And beautiful to behold!

NoFumbleRumble Watercolors by Bertie Brown

NoFumblerRumble

original watercolor football practice: 9" x 12"

Sophie and I

are “sitting” you see

‘cause ARBy is here

between her and me

this shiny new babe

is joining us girls

so we’ll make some room

for him in our world

now we’ve got to find

a space where he’ll fit

that’s not white or pink

or frilly, we think

he’s smart, ‘cause it’s true

just when he’s well fed

and we gently lay

 him down on his bed

we really do think

he’ll sleep for a spell

but then there’s a wink

and a baby-big yell!

I fooled ya I did

says his little grin

then he wrinkles up

he cute little chin

the next thing we hear

a whale of a wail

and yes, we do know

our plans have just failed

I tell Sophie, wait

I promise I do

that we will find time

for our girl time, too!

VanCleve-ish Watercolors by Bertie Brown

VanCleve-ish

original watercolor w/sunflowers, boots: 10" x 14"

what ho

Sophie and I

just want to know

who turned off the heat

and dimmed the lights low

where are the wool socks for our feet

our union jacks and turtlenecks

who said summer could retreat?

we are cold and so distressed

why can’t winter last one week

it’s time I guess

to hibernate

until next June

and we both hope

that comes real soon!

The HotWheels Domain Watercolors by Bertie Brown

The HotWheels Domain

original watercolor motor cycle home: 10" x 14"

press on, you say

so that’s what I do

not cease and desist

that’s never okay…

to break through the fray

you gotta hang tough

and paint every day

talent’s just not enough

Christmas Candyland B&B Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Christmas Candyland B&B

original watercolor room scape: 10" x 14"

Sophie Says

what ho

I really want to know

who’s lying in that manger bed

with a stable roof o’er His head

and why are there reindeer

flying in the night sky

with a guy in a sleigh

following close behind

And

there’s a tree in our house

with packages strewn about

that I’m not s’posed to touch

and there seems to be such

a decorating fuss

it’s confusing, you know

for a two year old, so

I’ll just ask BB

I’m hoping that she

can explain it to me!

Old Yeller Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Old Yeller

original watercolor still life w/sunflowers, paints, bananas: 9" x 12"

Winter Blues

oh, how I long for June or July

with summer sunshine

and butterflies passing by

this season of cold

has taken it’s hold

with harsh winds now wailin’

seems the sun has gone sailin’

so I’m getting all set,

though it’s hard not to fret,

as blankets cover my lap

 and I settle in

 for a long mid-winter’s nap.....

i once had a thought

original and clever...

but that thought i forgot!

gone forever? i hope not..

yes fraught and distraught

‘cause it may have been great

that thought i just lost!

and the farmer said

to the critters in his shed

why don’t you simply try

to lay your views aside

just get along today

‘cause that’s the kinder way

to live in peace ’n harmony

will  benefit you all you see

Cor en Fleur Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Cor en Fleur

original watercolor sunflowers/horn: 10" x 14"

Conch en Fa

There once was a seashell named Conch

Who was lonely, displeased with his lot

He puffed out his cheek

Buzzed a low mellow screech

Now he’s part of the rock group “Conch-crete”

Autumness Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Autumness

original watercolor fall landscape: 9" x 12"

you cannot be chicken

if you do some paintin’

unless you are thinkin’

you’d like a good lickin’

‘cause just when that paint

does wondrous fresh stuff

your brain turns to mush

and you muck it all up

SoloSunny Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

SoloSunny

original watercolor sunflower: 10" x 10"

Ackkk!

 the sun’s in retreat

giving me the cold shoulder

this summer romance

is apparently over

gone are the sundrops

warming my face

menacing shadows

have taken their place

 cobalt blue breezes

rustle about

autumn is coming

of that there’s no doubt

my sunflowers are ruined

their beauty in tatters

seeds, petals, leaves

lie tossed about, scattered

i notice the dance

of those spurious squirrels

as they snatch the remains

of my golden sun girls

more quickly than ants

at a picnic, they advance

and I thought that finches

were sunflower grinches!

now I’m left all alone

‘neath a dry, crumbling wall

where my sunflowers once stood

majestic and tall

i’ll try not to fear

as hope becomes clear

they’ll be back next year

with more summertime cheer!

Cor d'Fleur Sunflower Watercolors by Bertie Brown

Cor d'Fleur

original watercolor with sunflowers/ horn: 10" x 14"

Going Solo

The horn stands alone

Not lost or forlorn

Just a confident fellow

Shiny outside

Inside, mellow.

Its song, so melodious

With notes that do soar

But can be quite odious

When notes don’t sound sure

One thing’s for certain

With a rising stage curtain

The horn likes to play

In a most excellent way!
