Symphony in Sea Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Symphony in Sea
original watercolor seascape: 12" x 16"
oh to be
by the sea
the sun shining on me
boist'rous sea
mysteries
in the ocean abyss
where there's no
ice and snow
oh i'd happily go
but for now
polar WOW
time to flee the snow plow
i need June
please come soon
lest i fear i am doomed!

And the Music Said "Rest' Watercolors by Bertie Brown
And the Music Said "Rest"
original watercolor figure w/violin: 11" x 15"
A quick study draw
With some splashes of paint
Complete what I call
“A poser
who’s a dozer
with a violin
Near her shin”

QuinteScape Watercolors by Bertie Brown
QuinteScape
original watercolor woodwind quintet: 10" x 14"
The French Conundrum
The French Horn is happy
Wherever it plays
From Woodwinds and Brass
To the Strings with such class.
Yes, the instruments agree
That it’s sound does so please.
And most of the time
The horn is quite amiable
But it can get unruly
And downright unplayable!

Uke'n Do It Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Uke'n Do It
original watercolor ukulele: 8" x 10"
there once was a girl named BB
who decided a ukulele
would be just the thing
to hasten on spring
now she’s strummin’ with Uke Uprising
yes it’s true that this girl named BB
once played horn in her town’s symphony
when she lost her good buzz
she took up uke becuzz
ukers don’t fret, they sing and they strum!
so come to the Ukulele
Uprising and surely you’ll see
that strumming the uke
with this friendly group
is great fun of'a Tuesday eve’ning

Basic'ly Brass Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Basic'ly Brass
original watercolor and ink Brass: 8" x 10"
brass blast
would a trumpet
be a strumpet
if she played a loose lipped jig
while her brother
played another
more pretentious tight hipped gig
would a trumpet
eat a crumpet
while she played a high brow dig
could a strumpet
be a pundit
if she shed her platinum wig?
would a trumpet
be a strumpet
if she wore one high heeled shoe
could a crumpet
clog a trumpet
if it got stuck in her tube?

The RedHead Watercolors by Bertie Brown
The RedHead
original watercolor redheaded woodpecker: 5" x 7"
what ho
Sophie and I
Just want to know
who turned off the heat
And dimmed the lights low
where are the wool socks for our feet
Our sweater sets
And turtlenecks
who said summer could retreat?
We are cold and so distressed
why can’t winter last one week
It’s time I guess
To hibernate until next June
And we both hope
That comes real soon!

Those Eyes Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Those Eyes
original watercolor: 4" x 6"
What ho!
the winds they are screamin’
my house it is leanin’
right into the flow
of this nor’easterly blow
my windows are bulgin’
and heat I’m indulgin’
this nor’easter’s hold
is keepin’ me cold
from my Rudolf red nose
to my ten tinseled toes

‘cause it may have been great
that thought i just lost!

Symphony Season Watercolors by Bertie Brown
Symphony Season
original watercolor w/instruments: 12" x 15"
The Maestro’s Woes
Horns near the backdrop
The Strings own the front spots
Right in the center
Are the Woodwind renters
Drums and percussion
Beat out the instructions
Harp and Celesta
Join in their discussions...
Playing together for better or worse
Learning the music
They all must rehearse
Perfecting rhythms
Some tricky, some fun
All of the orchestra
Playing as one...
Allegretto
Meno mosso
And Con Brio, too
Mezzo, Piano, Fortissimo Piu
We love all those ways
To play!
Tubas and trombones
Will fight for their turf
Oboes with puffed cheeks
Look ready to burst
Flutes, Clarinets
The Violas, Trumpets
All so polite
As they try not to fight.....
Instruments waiting for Maestro to cue
Watching the down beat
His hand in their view
A Violin shrieks
A clarinet squeaks
Scowls from the Maestro
But onward they go...
When notes don’t sing
From the high Strings
Or a horn butts in
The music continues
The Maestro in tow
The audience shouts
“Bravo!”

Daughter-in-Law Portraits by Bertie Brown
Daughter-in-Law
original watercolor portrait: 8" x 10"
Winter Blues
oh, how I long for June or July
with summer sunshine
and butterflies passing by
this season of cold
has taken it’s hold
with cold temps and wind wailin’
seems the sun has gone sailin’
so I’m getting all set,
though it’s hard not to fret,
as blankets cover my lap
and I settle in
for a long mid-winter’s nap......
