that his music wouldn’t curry
to his benefactors’ whims
casting poverty on him
heavens no
I don’t think so
as his storied life has shown

back in the day
I remember we played
with marbles and jacks
and baseballs and bats
but sometimes I recall
though I tried hard to stall
I had to apply
my lip
to the tip
of my tarnished old horn
and try not to sound
too bad or forlorn
much later I found
practice, patience plus time
would greatly improve
my horn teacher’s mood!

And give a loud shout
As percussion dance about
It’s all relative
As time surely tells
In life’s ebb and flow
Season’s come and they go.....
